Another "show me your" question for the mamas/to be

Sorry for all the questions ladies. As you can see, I have a very exciting Saturday night going on right now.

For those who BF, please show me your pump. Do you like it? If you could start over, is there is a different one you would have chosen?

  • I use a Medela Swing or Harmony at home and the Symphony at work. I don't really recommend any of them lol. The two I have at home are single pumps and the motor on the Swing died after 8-9 months, I don't even use it that often. Medela replaced it since it hadn't been a year, but I don't know. It's not great.

A lot of girls on another board have been having a lot of issues with Medela and a few switched to Ameda and like it better. I guess the Purely Yours is a closed system so you can't suck milk into the tubing like with the Medela ones. In theory I'm guessing that means less moldy tubing and replacing parts. I haven't used it personally, though, so I can't comment.

  • I used the Medela Pump In Style Advance (PISA). I liked it and had no problems. Double pump is the way to go if you know you're going to be pumping a lot (ie work). I used the Medela Swing before I went back to work like to relieve pressure and build up my stash. It crapped out on me after 2 months and I didn't really use it a ton.

  • one more thing - a hands free pumping bra is a must! there are makeshift ways to do it too but they aren't too expensive for their worth! I have one you can have if we're the same size.

This is the one we registered for. I emailed back and forth with quite a few BF mommies about which ones they loved and why. DH has this one through his work (medical supply company) because it seems to come to most recommended as well. I picked it because the girls I was chatting with were all exclusive pumpers though.

     Good luck!!

Oh I am so glad you guys mentioned this, two girls I know said cutting holes in sports bras works fine but I really wasn't so sure.

Jess, can you e-mail me the link to your hands free bra too? :) The BFing board recommended the Simple Wishes one.

  • For you ladies with the PIS, is it hands-free?
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • this is the one i have: http://tinyurl.com/3d897ag

i actually tried quite a few and i hate all the others.  what i like most about it is that it's thin and easy to just slide over my shirt.  i've tried ones with zippers, snaps, etc... and they are just so bulky and annoying.  i also noticed that i get more milk when i use this one.  i guess it holds the shield better than the other ones.

i know it says it's out of stock at amazon but i've gotten a couple from different online sites.

and dani, i don't have the hands free PIS but if you are able to get someone to buy it for you, i totally recommend it!

  • I originally tried this one http://tinyurl.com/3dvu2ns and hated it.

then I got this one http://tinyurl.com/3q9v2cf and loved it. I would just undo my nursing bra and the wrap this one around me and zip it up. Then when I was done, just take it off and re-snap my nursing bra.

Pooks, the sports bra thing would almost definitely work work but I thought it would be too hard to put it on and off all the time - too tight I think - and I wouldn't be able to wear it all the time since you can't nurse with it on.

  • Thinking about all this is making me woozy Wink Thanks for asking the question Dani, I'm totally going to go by these rec's.

Someone told me not to register for a pump because you won't know if BF is right for you yada yada yada. I figure if you have the pump right away at the very least you can exclusively pump...

And you can always craigslist the pump if you never get a good supply going. That's my logic anyways.

Curious if you guys have read this... or had any issue similar to it with your pumps?
Fourteen Pump in Style Advanced electric breast pump complaints document motors and transformers smoking or catching fire.

And yes, I realize that 14 in all the pumps they sold aren't many, but just wanted to keep the conversation going...

  • i actually told dani about this the other day.  medela actually overnighted anyone a new power cord if you called and your pump was manufactured during a certain date.  people on the bump that i know had great things to say about their customer service.

they actually overnighted tubing to me for free even though i had a pump from someone else and i wasn't the original owner.

  • Thanks for all your help ladies. Aleesh - I don't think I'm going to register for a pump. I already found that ebay is WAY cheaper than BRU. I think I'll just buy it myself.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I can understand that advice, because it definitely does happen. We went ahead and got the cheap(er) Swing and when we saw this was going to work (and I absolutely needed a double pump) we bought the PISA on our own (then I saw hands free was the way to go I got the pumping bra).

I didn't have that problem you posted about, Mar. I have also heard good things about customer service with regards to them overnighting parts, etc.

  • Dani-use breastpumpdeals.com.  We got my PISA for 219.
  • Late to the pumping party here, but wanted to add in my "support" for the Simple Wishes hands-free bra. Here's me using it while I make dinner.

    image

BWA HAHAHA!! Yeah, no. If anyone can make dinner while pumping, more power to ya.

Anyway, I have the PISA and haven't had any problems with it. I like it because the Dr. Brown's bottles screw into it, so I don't have to transfer milk -- I just pumped directly into Jacob's bottles.

I also had to buy a different size breastshield, which made everything so much more comfortable. It's nice that Medela has about 4 different sizes.

OMG I laughed at that far too loudly at work.

  • At first since the thread was loading I could only see the top of her head to see it was brown hair and I thought it was going to be you for a second! Yeah, I could not imagine doing anything other than sitting at my desk while pumping! And don't you love her nice flat (almost concave) stomach. And she's very happy. lol
