Hello.
I'm a manager in the financial services industry. Due to a takeover, i was bought out and after briefly being unemployed, I'm back working in a similar position for another company.
My career goal would be to get a promotion to one job band above mine and hopefully transfer to a different department (in no particular order).
Now the wrench is that I want to have a baby... just one, I swear. I'd rather do this sooner rather than later, but I'm not sure the best way to attack this.... i.e. do I work long enough to either transfer/promotion (minimum 1 full year) or do I TTC and try for the career movements later? (if I TTC, I still have to work for 1 year before I can go off, but I could TTC before my year is up and work the balance of my 9 months.)
The question is how will these decisions affect my reputation within the company, and which would hold me back more/less? i.e. if I go out on mat leave 1.5 years after starting my job, how will I come across? if I have a baby, will they fear that I'm just going to have more and hold me back from promotions?
Thoughts? Advice?

IMO it depends on your industry and your company (if you plan to stay at the same company), and even your individual managers. Some are more family friendly than others. The last company I worked for was incredibly family friendly and didn't have an issue with the fact that people had lives and wanted to add children to them. If you did your job and put in the time (within reason), the fact that you had children didn't impact promotion potential.
It may be worth it to look around at other people in your company who have children, and those who don't. See if there is a culture of holding people back if they have families, or if they see that as just another part of their lives and treat it as such.

Well said everyone! Having children does not mean you are incapable of future promotions...GL!
