Dog UTI? Edited Post Vet Appt

I should most likely just bring Chloe to the vet - but I wanted to explain her symptoms here and see if anyone had a clue.

Chloe had a pee accident in her kennel yesterday when we were gone for 2.5 hours. We let her out before we left and she did go pee within 5 minutes of us leaving. Then last night she had a pee accident in the living room. It had been about an hour since she was last out.

When we brought her out she would squat and run.. not sure how to explain it exactly, but she was just being really odd and was peeing but moving at the same time, but would only pee a tiny bit. This morning she went normally.

Last night I googled canine UTI and one symptom was pus/discharge down there, so when Chloe was laying down I picked up one of her legs so I could inspect (sorry - no filter/shame here..) and everything looked normal but I lightly pushed down on her skin around there and she leaked a bit of urine.

She seems normal as far as energy and appetite. She was a lazy bum this morning, but she usually is after the weekend since we are typically very active on the weekend.

Does this sound like a UTI?

Edited after getting home from the vet: Yes - Chloe does have a UTI. I'm glad I trusted my gut on this one. She had bacteria and both w&r blood cells in her urine, but she didn't have any crystals - so that's good! 10 days of antibiotics with a recheck at the end. I'm not glad she has a UTI, but I am glad that it's figured out and we can get her feeling better. Thank you all for your help today!

Re: Dog UTI? Edited Post Vet Appt

  • When Winnie had a UTI after being spayed, her main symptom was peeing after having just gone out within an hour or so. And leaking. She leaked when laying around. And then in one accident I noticed a tiny drop of blood, so I knew exactly what it was. A week of antibiotics cleared her right up. It does sound like Chloe might have one. I can't speak to the lethargy issue because Winnie had just been spayed and was lethargic from that.
  • I would definitely bring her in. Every dog is different when it comes to their pain threshold and how many symptoms they will show for a UTI but with the ones you listed (I would mention the leaking with pressure to the vet too) I would definitely bring her in. Our dog, Sofie, had a really bad UTI and ended up having 16 struvite stones (they are stones caused by infection) and she never had an accident in the house. The only symptoms were that she would squat more than once when we were outside and it seemed odd to us since she never did that before. A UTI is something I don't mess around with because if it gets bad it can cause a lot of issues so if I even have a  thought that my dog could have one I get them in to the vet asap. Let us know if she ends up having one.

  • I would bring her in, it sounds like a UTI.  Pus/discharge is rarely seen unless the infection is severe.  If she has a UTI antibiotics will clear it up quickly.

There are kidney/bladder stones that can cause those signs too.  They are rarer in young dogs, but I have seen it.

There can be other causes too, but at her age they are less likely.  Urinary incontinece is pretty common in boxers.  That is determined by running a urinalysis that is normal and trying some retraining.  If there is leaking and dripping that continues then it is likely incontinence.

  • Some dogs will lapse in their potty training and have to be retrained.

Ha - Ok. I should have assumed it was something that simple.. :)

We were told that we might have issues with Chloe adjusting to Jenson, and that she might 'act out' after the newness of having J around wears off. It could be this.. but that doesn't explain the odd way she was going last night - squatting but then getting partially up and running to a new spot while in a half squat.. but yeah - it could be a potty training lapse. TY!

  • Everyone pretty much covered it, but Puck had a UTI when he was like 6-7 months old.  He did the same, half-squatting thing, and peeing while walking kind of issue.  He also dripped a little blood, which is what caused us to (unknowingly) over-react and rush him to the ER vet.  oops.  Oh well! He was much better after only a few days.
  • The antibiotics should make her feel better pretty quick.  Good to hear it was just a UTI!

  • My poor baby, I could tell that she was uncomfortable yesterday because she curled into the tiniest little ball and slept, occasionally whimpering. She normally doesn't want to sleep so much, especially on a work day that she's kenneled for 9 hours.

Hopefully she'll be on the mend soon!

  • i'm so happy to hear that you've identified the source of her discomfort and she'll be on the mend now. : )
