Ladies who have the Mirena IUD

I forgot to ask my doctor if its effective right away or not.  I looked online and its says yes as long as implanted within 1st 7 days of your cycle, but I just wanted to double check to see if anyone here knew, cause we all know how unreliable the internet can be.  Thanks.

Re: Ladies who have the Mirena IUD

  • My 2 cents - I don't have an IUD, but always use backup birth control for 30 days whenever you switch to something new (well, unless you are switching to condoms!). Unless you're ok with 2 under 1 ;-)

    Totally not!!!!

  • Then as a friend to at least 3 people with unplanned babies right now - use a back up method for at least 30 days. :-)

  • You should have been scheduled for a follow up appointment within the first six weeks of getting it to make sure that it was in place and nothing had changed.  Until you have that appointment and you get the all clear you are supposed to use a back up method.  They *are* pretty much immediately effective but sometimes the body can reject it or depending on the state of the vaginal/pelvic walls and floors it can shift or fall out of place.
  • I have had mine for 3 years and my doctor told me to use a backup method for the first month.  I absolutely love my Mirena though.  On top of the fact that I don't have to think about BC, I never get a period.
  • I was also told use a back up for 30 days.... and like the pp said, I no longer get a period either!  Every now and then I will still get some cramps and spotting, but other than that nothing!
  • what is wrong with you?  stop having sex, myrtle.

    bwahahahah :)
