Help me paint my brother's living room....
My brother had purchased our parents house shortly before our mother had passed away. It's been about 4 years, and he's finally ready to re-paint. He asked me if I wanted to take care of painting the living room. I agreed, but now I have to find colors that will work. Our mom just had new carpeting put down about 10 years ago...so my brother doesn't want to get rid of it since it's in really good shape. The only problem is that it is a cranberry-ish color.
What manly/earthy wall colors will go with cranberry carpet??

Re: Help me paint my brother's living room....
What do you think along the lines of greens. He likes how our mom did her dining room. The top half is a pretty yellow, there is a green/yellow floral border (Longaberger), and then green striped paper on the lower half. A matching Longaberger valance is at the top of the sliding door. There is a divider wall between the dining room and living room, so he was thinking along the lines of green to tie them in...
I did like that color you posted earlier.
I am a big fan of the brown/tan walls I think they are warm and inviting. But maybe a light grey tone would help balance out the cranberry carpet and be manly and earthy at the same time.
That's what a coworker just suggested....
I'm off to check out greys...
I like the idea of the tan / cream / latte because you can do really warm furniture to go with and give it a masculine and grounded feel. I just read the suggestion for the grey too, which could work as well especially with leathers and wood tables.
I think I would try to make sure that whatever color you do go with ... that the undertones match the undertones of the cranberry ... so if the cranberry has cool undertones, then the paint should too (or vice versa with warm undertones). I think matching those will help make the colors feel more cohesive.
I think green would make it look like Christmas, honestly. I mean I love Christmas time, but I think green walls with red carpet is a little much. Yellow could work better than the tan/brown if the living room is normally dark and doesn't get a lot of natural light. If he wants to tie the living room in with the dining room I'd go yellow.
I like the idea of gray as opposed to tan for a more "masculine" feel.
What do think of these colors? (obviously I'm bored at work!)
Dapper Dan:
Austere Gray:
Cityscape:
Hardware:
Relaxed Khaki:
Thunderous:
Attitude Gray:
intellectual Gray:
Rushing River:
Willow Tree:
Pewter Green:
Argos:
Nightowl:
Swanky gray:
Mountain Road:
This is basically the color of the carpeting, maybe a hair darker in person.:

I like these the best:
Relaxed Khaki:
intellectual Gray:
Rushing River:
Hardware:

Relaxed Khaki:
intellectual Gray:

Rushing River:
Willow Tree:

Depending on the lighting in the room, if it is naturally light or he has good lighting I would do the
Rushing river or willow tree
If the room is on the darker side you should do the relaxed Khaki or the Argos.
I think it would look nice to do the room in argos with an accent wall of Cityscape. But to do that he would need some punches of color on the wall (great artwork) to complement the carpet or the room could end up looking really drab.
This is what I was thinking, after I was looking at all the color samples.
