My SIL (DH's brother's wife) makes me kind of crazy. She lives across the country with her DH and our nephew and she's kind of insecure about living so far from the rest of the family (everyone else lives within a mile of each other). She makes comments to MIL about how they will love my kids more than hers because I live in town and she doesn't, etc. At the same time, she realizes that flying as a family of 3 is expensive, so she doesn't want to come visit very often.
She has this rich aunt who has materialized out of thin air a few years ago and has been helping them financially quite a lot. She paid for a lot of the furniture in their new house (including getting their dining room furniture shipped from India), among other things.
SIL apparently called my other sis in law last week and told her that her DH is thinking of getting his pilot's license, and her aunt is going to help them buy a plane so they don't have to worry about airfare anymore! Squee!
I have a feeling that jet fuel + airplane storage is going to be more pricy than 3 coach tickets, not to mention I can't imagine flying from AZ to OH in a puddle jumper would be a great time, especially with a 2 year old, but whatever. I can't wait to see if she actually does this and see if it goes over like a lead balloon with the ILs.

Re: My SIL's latest "great idea"
How come I don't have any aunts like this?
That is one of the craziest things I've ever heard. And also hilarious. I don't know how much those Buddy Holly-killing planes cost to buy (not to mention the fuel and other costs), but I would harbor a guess that it's substantially more than plane tickets, even once a year for a lifetime. They have to run at a couple of hundred grand, at minimum.

Ooh, good idea about the barge.
I think MIL will have an aneurysm thinking about A) her oldest child flying a plane and
her grandbaby flying across the country in a puddle jumper. My (sane) SIL has sworn me to secrecy so I can't tell DH about this, so I had to share with someone. SIL wants to wait to tell everyone as a family once her DH gets his license and they buy the plane.
But yet she complains that we should change how we distribute Christmas presents (like buy a big gift for one person instead of gifts for everyone) because "it gets too expensive" otherwise.
Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
Wait.. the aunt wants to BUY her a PLANE?
Jeebus.
Um wow. This is all very crazy! I'm sorry, but if Josh wanted to become a pilot, there's no way I'd be down with that! No thank you, I'll just hop on a commercial plane with a real pilot and call it a day!
Plus, like pp mentioned the expenses involved in owning and maintaining a plane have to be astronomical.
I'd be interested to see if/how this pans out.

I dated a pilot for a minute. In my 21 year old brain, I had all of these fantasties about us jetting away for the weekend. Bahaha. I'm laughing at myself now just thinking about it. At least, I had sense enough to know we'd charter a plane. Not buy one.
My mom has to ride on a "Buddy Holly" plane sometimes for her work. They fly her places to fire people. She hates it, and she's a frequent flier. Those little planes are another ballgame.
You should send her over to the MM board to get an education.
Hmmm. Cost of Plane + gas + insurance + storage (b/c you can't park it in your driveway) + maintenance + Taxes = a lot more than 3 commercial flight tickets/year.
So the aunt will buy the plane and lessons, but not give them $ to fly commerical? Why can't the aunt buy them tickets for an annual trip? Seems like a less complicated (and safer) solution.
I have no idea. When they came out last time they used all of FIL's frequent flyer miles.
Personally I think they should be grown ups and pay for their own stuff they can afford, but that's a whole other issue.
Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
