What should I Charge?

There's a cake that I've made for work a few times and this one co-worker really likes it. He actually asked me today if there's any way I could make it and bring it to him on Friday so that he could serve it over the weekend for something! He wants to pay me for it, which seems reasonable to me. I know it would be nice of me to just bake it for him for free, but he's approaching this as more of business thing and he asked me to let him know how much he should pay. So I'm not sure what to charge him? The ingredients seriously only cost me like $5 but then there's the time it takes to make it. So... maybe $10? Ah, not sure. Thanks for any advice :)

Re: What should I Charge?

  • I would say cost plus 30% for supplies (remember, you are also using energy to run your appliances and water to wash the dishes).  And then whatever your hourly rate would be, for however long you took to prep/decorate it.  Say it takes 10 minutes to mix and 40 minutes to decorate, charge for the hour.  I would not charge for the baking time, though, if you are figuring in those expenses to your costs.

  • Oh gosh, I am never good at these things.  I always feel awkward setting a price and I always insist on doing whatever it is that is being requested for free.

But I think if you had to set a price $10 sounds reasonable to me.  I mean, cakes from Publix cost about the much (or at least I think they do) and homemade cakes taste so much better!!

Just curious, what type of cake are you baking?

  • $10 sounds reasonable to me.  If you want to calculate it Nicole's way I would charge $16.

  • Thanks ladies, I appreciate it.

Kathy, it's a Glazed Chocolate Kahlua cake :)

  • Is there actual Kahlua in it?

I would charge more for putting alcohol in it!

  • Don't forget to include any supplies you use that you have at home already, like the vanilla/salt anything little you might not have to buy separate but you're paying for nonetheless.
  • Yeah it has kahlua and vodka in it but I have tons of vodka at home and I bought tons of mini kahlua bottles last year, super cheap :)

    True, thanks!

  • Ok - first off I think you should post the recipe here. I cant have that now since I am prego but would love to try it once the baby comes.

As far as what to charge, I would tell him $10 or $15.

However you could just say nothing and maybe he would get you a gift card or something which could wind up being more. :)

    It's my mom's recipe and it's always a hit!

    Ingredients

    • 1 box Duncan Hines Classic Yellow Cake mix
    • 1 box Jello instant chocolate pudding, 5 oz
    • 1/2 cup sugar
    • 4 eggs
    • 1 cup vegetable or canola oil
    • 1/4 cup vodka
    • 1/4 cup Kahlua
    • 3/4 cup water
    • Glaze:
    • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
    • 1/4 cup Kahlua

    Directions

    1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
    2. Combine all cake ingredients together in a large bowl and beat till smooth.
    3. Pour batter into greased bundt pan and bake for 45 minutes.
    4. Allow to cool for at least 2 hours.
    5. Prepare glaze.
    6. Once cake is cooled, slide carefully out of bundt pan onto a serving plate.
    7. Poke holes into cake with toothpick and pour glaze all over.
    8. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top of cake as decoration.

  • And as you can see from that recipe, it's really easy to make :) I want to charge him like.... $12 but I feel bad! Should I just go with $10? I won't go lower than $10, pretty sure.
  • What if you just tell him it costs about $12 for supplies and see what he does. If you tell him that is the cost for supplies and he wants to pay you anyhow, he may just decide $15 or $20 and that would leave the "awkwardness" out of it for you.

    It sounds delicious!
