  • Hi! Sorry, I didn't see this until this morning.

    Here is the recipe:

    12 cups Borax
    8 cups Baking Soda
    8 cups Washing Soda
8 cups Bar soap (finely grated on a box grater)

Mix all ingredients well and store in a sealed tub.
Use 1/8 cup of powder per full load.

I buy all of these ingredients at Giant in the laundry section. Wal-Mart carries everything also, but I use Fels-Naptha bar soap that's made specifically for laundry. I've heard you can use any bar soap you want for this recipe, but I like the light scent of the Fels. You can also get the ingredients online, but might be cheaper in the store.

Grating the soap is the most time consuming part, but it only takes about 1-1.5 hours and then I'm done for about two years, so it's worth it to me.

It's more environmentally friendly, gentle (probably could wash baby clothes in it) and cost-effective. Hope that helps!

  • WOW!!!  That looks easy.  Do you know how it does in HE/Front loaders?

  • It's super easy! I have a top load, but I turned my aunt on to making this same recipe and she has a front loader and has no problems at all. She's hooked now, and I believe she uses 1/4c white vinegar as softener too. This works great b/c it's gentle, natural, and doesn't leave any residue on clothes like other softeners do.

  • Oh and just to reiterate, grate the soap on the fine side of a box grater so that it dissolves easier in the wash. I wash on the cold cycle most of the time and have no problems.

  • What the heck is Washing soap? lol

For the bar of soap is it like the bars of soap for the bath or what? I have no clue!  Definitely interested in trying this though!

  • Washing soda is an Arm and Hammer product. Don't really know what it is, but it seems to work!

I've heard you can use any bar soap that's finely grated, but I've only ever used the Fels Naptha soap.

Yes, def try it! It really is worth it.

  • How much of each do you buy when you go to make it? Is 1 of each enough of do you have to get more then that?

  • I think I get two boxes of Borax and washing soda, 4 little boxes of baking soda and about 8 bars of soap to make that recipe.
