Re: your response to my post below -- tell me more about preschoolers and crafts.

I don't plan out elaborate projects like some of the other SAHMs but Helen does like to do "arts and craps" (as she calls it!).  Sticking foam stickers to things, finger paint, stringing beads on pipecleaners, etc.  And she's crazy about glue sticks!

The story time at the Sanford library we go to each week includes a small craft related to the story theme each week and Helen usually does at least part of it (with me finishing the rest so we can take it home).

These are not bad things, right?

Re: ***grahamsm3***

  • The deal is that ideally you give the child the materials and let them go and do whatever they want to do.

So you put out paper and markers and say CREATE!! The next day might be pom-poms, paper bags, and glue. Another day is making play dough and playing with it or using play dough toys with it. Then running cars through paint and running them over paper another day

But you do not say, "Helen, we are making a Hand Puppet today - I need you to put the eyes here, the nose here, we will use red to draw a mouth - walla! a puppet!!"

Now, making a cute craft for a holiday or daddy's birthday and having something that looks like something  is not going to hurt at all.

But for everyday, it is good to focus on the process and not the product. It is not supposed to matter if they "make something" just that they "create something"

I have seen good and bad librarian art projects - but I would imagine that once a week of half doing a project won't stifle her creativity.

http://www.amazon.com/Scribble-Art-Independent-Creative-Experiences/dp/0935607056 - a popular book you can look for in the library.
