Anyone rented a dumpster before?

DH and I are tearing down our shed this spring and putting a new one up in a diff spot.  We know we will need to rent a dumpster to put all the materials in.  Has anyone rented one before?  Do you have a place that you recommend?  What was the cost and for how many days?

Thanks!

Re: Anyone rented a dumpster before?

  • We have - but my uncle owns a dumster/roll off company so I have no idea on the cost.

I will say - that you should get a larger size than you think you need. Everyone thinks that a smaller size will work - but they always end up needing more room in the dumpster. It's easier to just book the larger size right away than deal with an overflowing dumpster later. 4 of our friends who rented dumpsters ended up needing the larger size.

  • Veolia/Vasko has roll off service for smaller dumpsters.  They have a 4 and 6 yard dumpsters that worked really well for my bathroom remodel (complete tear out of plaster/lath/flooring/insulation and all fixtures).  They are spendy, I think it was close to 400 for the week.  I will caution you to keep an eye on it because your neighbors might help themselves to dispose of stuff you can't put in there (like TVs).  Sad, but true.

Another option for you would be the Tubs program.  They have smaller sized dumpsters 2 yarders I think- even heavy duty tarp like bags that might work for you as well.

Waste Management does roll off dumpsters but when I checked, the smallest you could order was a 10 yard which is really big.

And lastly - Veolia has a public dump site in St. Paul. If you have access to a truck or trailer, you can bring it there and you pay $40 for the first 400 pounds and I can't remember what you pay beyond that.  You drive up on a scale before you dump and again after and pay for what you disposed of.  We've gotten rid of smaller stuff that way before and it was really fast and easy (but smelly since the garbage trucks are coming in at the same time).

  • Oh!   And I forgot to mention that some of those places might be willing to give you an extra pickup if you order a smaller one and need it dumped once during the week.
  • I used a dumpster in a bag http://www.thebagster.com/ for our remodeling project.  It worked well and was really convenient - I'm not sure how much I really saved
  • we had one in our driveway for MONTHS during our basement remodel. we rented from atomic. i think it was about $500 for the whole time and it was a big one, taller than me and about 15 feet long.
  • I have not, but am interested in what you come up with.  I want to clean out the basement this summer and possibly remodel the bathroom, and will likely need a dumpster as well.
  • I have used Twin City Refuse 3x and they were great, very affordable. I prefer to have the dumpster come and go in the same day (we just loaded up our garage with junk and filled the dumpster that day) so others don't throw unwanted items in there. This worked well with our complete kitchen gut.

  • We also used Twin City and rented the 6 yard for just under $400 last fall. We took the advice of going larger (like Anita said above) and filled it full. I would also agree with get it in/out in a day or you will have people dropping off their stuff and others digging through your garbage.
  • Definitely third or fourth the suggestion to get a larger one than you need.  We did some landscaping a couple years ago and thought we would need 1 medium size box and ended up filling that plus 3 large ones. Not sure of the price.

Also second the suggestion to get it dropped off/picked up the same day.  My mom's side of the family owns one of these companies and you'd be amazed at the number of complaints from customers who end up with half full dumpsters because strangers throw stuff in overnight.

  • I second the suggestion for Bagster.  You can buy them at many local hardware type stores so you get them as soon as you need them (as opposed to waiting for delivery) and you just fill them up and call them when they're ready to come pick up.  Also, they go through whatever is in there and recycle & donate whatever they can.
