So DH's cousin is getting married this July. They just emailed their wedding website and I was looking at their proposal story. Turns out DH's grandma gave the cousin (her 2nd grandson) a diamond to give to the FI. They had pics on their website and it's like a carat solitaire.
I was so pissed last night! Why would g-ma give cousin a diamond and not DH? DH is the firstborn grandson, and he had to save for a while to be able to afford my ring, why would cousin not have to do the same? Now DH and MIL are all butt-hurt too and it's going to turn into some big drama. Grr..
Re: WTF
That is a bummer. MH didn't tell his parents he was going to propose, and when we called them to say we were engaged, MIL said she'd been planning to offer H her mother's diamond. Blurg.
What are the cousin's parents' situation? Maybe grandma assumed that your ILs were going to help H, since it sounds like they're fairly well off?
Oh wow. Yup, that surely would cause some hurt feelings. I'm agreeing with Mushe, perhaps they thought that DH's cousin was in need of the diamond since he may be financially challenged?
I would want to know why but I'd just leave it alone and avoid causing any family drama.
I would be hurt/upset but keep my mouth shut. Maybe it's like MushE said, and she thought the other guy needed it more than your DH. I still think that's kind of crappy, but it's her choice. I don't blame you one bit for being upset, and I would be dying to know why she did it, but unfortunately there's nothing you can really say.
Take comfort in the fact that it could be a crappy diamond! MIL has a bigger diamond but it has a ginormous flaw in it, because FIL was told that bigger is better, so he bought the 1-carat that was in his budget. I've seen several bigger diamonds that aren't great cut/clarity/color. Obviously there are nice ones out there, too, but my mean-spirited self likes to be reminded that flaws are way more noticeable in a large diamond
Oh, I get that it stings, I was just trying to soften the blow, KWIM? Sometimes family is a puzzle.
Which I'm now figuring out w/ DH's fam. My fam never seems to have random drama like that...
Brew, I love you. Please don't be offended when I say that this whole story gave me a good giggle. Just the absurdity of it all.
hahaha
Poor gma is going to fall over when your cousin comes out of the closet and his ex-wife runs off with gma's family heirloom.
Old people don't think so straight sometimes. Have you had her checked for dementia?

My family has its fair share of drama, but it's pretty out in the open. DH's family is a different kind of sneaky, back-stabby drama and it's really hard to keep up. If I offend/piss off someone, I want them to TELL me so I can fix it or apologize, or tell them to suck it up if I think it's ill-deserved. I hate the behind-the-scenes whispering and that you're supposed to know when you've done something wrong, especially since the most random things are offensive to these people.
Sorry, didn't mean to make it all about me. My point is...I think all families are crazy, but some families are a different brand of crazy from what you're used to.
Dia-TOTALLY not offended, I completely agree, this whole situation is absurd!
Laura-Also agree, different brands of crazy are out there. I guess I'm still getting used to DH's family's brand.
Side note: Gma has been a little looney since Gpa divorced her only to marry HER BEST FRIEND
OH SNAP! Can you blame the lady for being a little batshit crazy after that?

I guess I can't say anything because my grandma gave me a three stone princess cut ring just to have for when I got married. I took the diamonds out and put them in my now 7 stone princess cut ring. If the other grandchildren knew, besides my brother, they would be super pissed and jealous and think, wtf?.
We are the closest to my grandma and spend the most time with her and call her when the other grand children live in the same town as her and dont even see her, so thats why we get speacial treatment. And they wonder why she doesn't buy them anything or know anything about their life. But I know when she passes away they are going to want everything she has. Mini rant over now, I could go on all day about those ungratful, uncaring, selfish cousins.
