Volunteering Poll

I've been considering becoming a volunteer with some type of organization but haven't decided what I want to do. I know there are several animal rescue volunteers on this board but I was wondering what other type of volunteer work you guys do. So...

1. Do you volunteer regularly?

2. If so, what group do you currently volunteer with?

3. If you've volunteered in the past, what groups have you worked with?

4. What volunteer experiences have you found the most rewarding?

Re: Volunteering Poll

  • 1. Sort of.

    2.  I 'work' the connect center at church from time to time.

    3. I was a volunteer EMT for 7 years.  I also volunteered to help out our Explorer Post.

    4. I LOVED being an EMT.  I miss most of it actually.

  • 1. Do you volunteer regularly?  I'd say more occassionally.

    2. If so, what group do you currently volunteer with?  Church.

    3. If you've volunteered in the past, what groups have you worked with?  I was quite the volunteer in high school.  I helped out at both a runaway shelter and a nursing home weekly.  Plus church activities.

    4. What volunteer experiences have you found the most rewarding?  I think anytime I can help another person is rewarding.  No matter how big or small the capacity.  Something that's not necessarily a big deal for me, could make a big difference for someone else.

  • 1. Do you volunteer regularly? No but I have periodically throughout my life.

    2. If so, what group do you currently volunteer with?  .

    3. If you've volunteered in the past, what groups have you worked with? I've worked with the Ronald McDonald House and with local schools.

    4. What volunteer experiences have you found the most rewarding?  That's a difficult question to answer. My parents benefited from RMH when I was born, so I liked repaying my debt in a sense and also helping give that same opportunity to other families. On the other hand, when I volunteered at the school it was like a big sister program where I worked with one student. We played games, did homework, talked, etc. I really liked getting to know who I was helping and also seeing the progress she made.

  • 1. Do you volunteer regularly? somewhat

    2. If so, what group do you currently volunteer with? I am a volunteer for the Wedding Guild at my church. There are 4 of us who meet with brides before their wedding day to discuss their plans, and then we work the rehearsal and the actual wedding. While I do this everytime there is a wedding, I didn't say regularly because it's only a commitment of 3 days for every wedding. We had one in Jan, one in Feb, one in March, and then we have one in May and one in Oct.

I also am a volunteer committee member for the American Diabetes Association Step Out to Fight Diabtes Walk. We try to get more participation, do fundraising, etc.

    3. If you've volunteered in the past, what groups have you worked with? I worked at the Sulzbacher Center in the nursery, as well as preparing and serving food. I also went door to door handing out flyers to try to find the killer of a girl Trey was friends with. I think that was with MAD DADS.

    4. What volunteer experiences have you found the most rewarding? I love helping withe weddings. One of the ladies is crazy pants and it's nice to know that the bride knows she can talk to me and I will make sure it goes how she wants it to go, no matter what the other lady tries to do or say.

Adding: I would love to volunteer with something I am really passionate about, like crime prevention, suicide prevention, anti bullying, or gay rights but haven't found anything that I could do yet.

    1. Do you volunteer regularly? I used to with my dog rescue.

    2. If so, what group do you currently volunteer with? It was Phoenix Animal Rescue, I have yet to find a rescue in Jacksonville that I love.

    3. If you've volunteered in the past, what groups have you worked with?

    4. What volunteer experiences have you found the most rewarding? I loved, loved, loved fostering. It was also extremely stressful and draining at times so loving it was a necessity otherwise it wouldn't be so rewarding.

I would think about what types of things are hot button important issues for you and focus on finding organizations that relate to those passions.

This is the approach I've taken but the first things that come to mind are things that I honestly think would be too emotionally difficult for me. I know that's selfish and that the idea of volunteering is to give something back but I don't want to add any extra stress to my life right now. I'm trying to come up with something that I'd still enjoy/be passionate about but that wouldn't be quite as difficult.

  • 1. Do you volunteer regularly?

    Semi regularly.

    2. If so, what group do you currently volunteer with?

I do something w/the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society every few months and twice a year I've been spending a 3 day weekend down at Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis

    3. If you've volunteered in the past, what groups have you worked with?

These groups are past & present. I'd like to find something I do on a more regular basis. I help w/LLS when they need people & Boggy Creek can really only be done the times that I do it b/c it's a pretty big chunk of time & I have to travel & take off of work. I also did Girls on the Run for their fall season.

    4. What volunteer experiences have you found the most rewarding?

Both have been rewarding, but hand down this goes to Camp Boggy Creek. It is such an amazing experience, I could go on and on. I cry every single freakin time. I love it there & the real world sucks everytime I come back. lol

Let me know if you find anything on this one. I've thought about it & looked into it a little. It's a big personal "hit home" issue for me so I'm not sure how emotional it would be...but I've considered it.

    No, but I used to.

    2. If so, what group do you currently volunteer with?

Previously volunteered through First Coast No More Homeless Pets in the Animal Care and Control Center in Mandarin helping with adoptions.

I also retrieved messages from their phone line - people who needed info about their low cost spay/neuter programs would leave their name/address and I would mail out information.

    3. If you've volunteered in the past, what groups have you worked with?

    See above

    4. What volunteer experiences have you found the most rewarding?

    Working with animals

I didn't know that!  Very cool.

  • 1. Do you volunteer regularly?  I did when I was UE and we have had a foster dog or two for the last three and a half months.

    2. If so, what group do you currently volunteer with?  Not the most popular and not anything I can add to the ol' resume, but I volunteered as a clinic escort at an abortion clinic when I was UE to help out against the protesters.  Now that I have to work during normal hours, I can't anymore.

    3. If you've volunteered in the past, what groups have you worked with?  A local abortion clinic and a BT rescue group that I don't particularly like at all.  I realize that's not helpful at all.

    4. What volunteer experiences have you found the most rewarding? Clinic escort.  For sure.
  • 1. Do you volunteer regularly?  Not really.  Usually, only if it's through groups at work.

    2. If so, what group do you currently volunteer with? March for Dimes

    3. If you've volunteered in the past, what groups have you worked with?  I've done the IM Sulzbacher (cooking and serving food), raising money and walking for multiple groups.

    4. What volunteer experiences have you found the most rewarding? Haven't found one that's more rewarding than the other.  All are equally the same.  However, volunteer at the IM Sulzbacher, you can actually see the people you're helping, even just for that night.
