Two ?'s: 1) re: Epidural 2) re: C-Section

I have my 6 week postpartum check up on Monday and I plan to ask my midwife about this but I figured I'd ask you ladies about your experiences.

1) How long afterward did you have lower back achiness around the site where the epidural was administered?

2) In regards to the incision for the c-section: How long did it take for the area around the incision to regain feeling?  I have partial feeling around it but there is still a decent section that is still numb where the nerves have not reconnected. Also, do you have a "lip" above the incision?  Do you think that will ever go away?  I'm glad the incision itself doesn't look like it will leave too bad of a scar but the little lip of skin bulging above it is really bothering me because it looks bad.  :/  I know in the grand scheme of things I should be grateful that the only thing I'm dealing with is a cosmetic issue, but that doesn't stop it from bugging me.

  • I only had an epi, and I never had any extra achiness, at least not that I can remember...not much help, I know =/

  • I still get random bouts of achiness around my epidural site. I assume because they had to do it twice. It's not like debilitating pain though, just a little ache, so my doc said it's not anything to worry about.

Can't help you with the c-section questions!
  • Yeah, it's not terrible pain.  Just an occasional ache, I just wasn't sure if it was normal because they didn't have any issues when they gave it to me.  In fact the anesthesiologist that administered it said it was the most perfect and easy epidural he had given in a long time because I was so relaxed and skinny he was able to get it right where it needed to be.  It's still really tender to the touch too.  I guess I also have to remember that I'm only 5 weeks out and still have healing to do even though I generally feel great.
  • I can only answer #1 and am also going to be no help.  I don't remember any aches either.  Sorry!

  • 1) Honestly, I have no memory of my epi spot. I think I ached a little bit for a day or so afterwards, but I don't remember it being much of an issue.

    2) It took a while for the area around the incision to be somewhat normal.  Mine didn't so much feel numb, but did this really weird tingly feeling especially when touched, kind in my whole torso. That affected area slowly got smaller and smaller, from whole torso to just around the actual incision. Every now and then I still get a general soreness around the area. Also, because I had such a toned stomach before getting pregnant, I've had a much more difficult healing process which is apparently really really common (seems highly unfair but I guess makes sense). What I thought was internal scar tissue is actually muscle, which I guess is a good thing but it just feels like its not in the right place or something.  I think I know what you mean about the lip and honestly, mines just about gone now...so...6 months? I don't know if thats just normal "deflation" of your uterus and it just hangs a little different for c-secs or what. It took me about 4.5 to feel ok doing my stomach exercises which might be why its taken so long and honestly, I don't even know if they help with that or not. But, like you, the actual incision is healing great.  Once I get my tone back, I'll just pretend the scar makes me look badasss and rugged, lol.

  • Hmm, I was thinking the small bulge I have on the one side of the incision was scar tissue, but it makes more sense for it to be muscle since I've had it since right after the surgery.  I really really hope that goes away because it's very unsightly. I'm excited to know that your lip did go away.  I can't wait to start exercising again next week, although I'm only one pound off of my pre-pregnancy weight I am a lot less toned.  I plan to just use my elliptical and some light lifting for a while first before doing any crazy work outs or ab exercises.  I'm hoping to be bikini ready for the summer though and I don't think it's an unreasonable goal because I already feel pretty good about how my stomach looks.  Right now it "looks good for having just had a baby" I want it to just look good again lol.
  • I'm late but my epidural site is fine. There isn't any soreness at all. I was definitely expecting some because a lot of people warned me there would be but I haven't had any as of yet. I'm pretty healed at this point.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...
