I swear Miley has hit her terrible twos!
She has never been a chewer, never a barker, not much of a whiner, but this last 3 weeks have been quite the different story. We have to kennel her at night again (which we haven't done for MONTHS) because she will get into EVERYTHING. Toilet paper, open the door to the garbage area and get into the garbage, headphones, remote controls, tip over the laundry baskets and chew holes in our clothes, our coffee table, and the corner of a rug in our kitchen to name a few reasons
We do spend a LOT of time outside since it's nicer now, and we take her out with us. She has a water dish out there and toys, etc. She has to stay on a tie out though or my beast will RUN. And find it funny when we try catch her! ![]()
She goes for 2 walks daily, but as soon as she gets back inside, she is at the door whining and barking ot go back out. May I add in we dont' dare NOT take her out if it's been a while in case she does legitimately have to pee, but uff...the terrible twos were easier with my kids! lol
Any tips for my beast? Longer walks? Prozac? Anything??
Re: I have a dog question for you too Kiz
Food toys!!!
The tug-a-jug and then the same company makes a food ball too. THE BEST INVENTION EVER.
Oh, and working on long stays - I swear, it helps with focus. Start at 15 seconds and then work your way up to 5 minutes. It takes a while, but the mental stimulation helps too.
She has the tug a jug and hates it...lol..spoiled I tell ya. I have an extra one if anyone wants one! lol
We do have a couple kongs that we fill with food mixed with a little applesauce and close it with peanut butter and freeze it. She LOVES those.
She does REALLY good with Stay. Outside we are working on it a little more, but inside she will stay and not take a treat right in front of her nose until I say "OK" She has waited until I go to the bathroom and change clothes. So she is great at that. Outside is a little more distractions for her so we are working on that now.
The only thing that remotely worked for my dog at that age was lots and lots of exercise. Walks weren't enough because I couldn't go fast or long enough for her. I hit a tennis ball (my parents have 10 acres of land so I'd hit it as hard as I could) and would bribe her back with treats dozens and dozens of times until she was literally too tired to run. If she didn't come back, I'd grab another ball and hit it in the opposite direction so she had to run clear across the yard. I did this before work, at lunch and in the evening if we didn't go for a walk. On the days I missed, it was the same problem you have with chewing.
She loved kongs but she got the food out too quickly for it to occupy her for any length of time.
She's 13 and she still gets into stuff if she doesn't get enough exercise or mental stimulation. It's not nearly as bad but we have to shut doors if we're going to be gone for more than a few hours or we come home to toilet paper all over the house, chewed up socks and trash.
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
The other posters have given great advice!
We adopted Renzo when he had just turned 3 so he had gotten over his "terrible 2's" by the time he joined our family. He IS a GSP though and they are notorious for lots of energy - he didn't disappoint in that category. :-) Luckily we have 2 dog parks within a couple miles of our house. We are there maybe 6 nights a week and it has been wonderful. A walk will NOT tire Renzo out. It will stimulate his brain a little but physically does nothing. He needs to run FULL SPEED for a LONG TIME in order to really be tired (and his "full speed" is probably like 30 mph. The dude is FAST). :-) We play fetch at the park and he LOVES it. He also loves playing chase with the other dogs. He comes home and passes out on the couch and it's great. When he doesn't get to run run run then he gets bouncy and destructive (his "treat" of choice is DH's leather shoes! Eeep!) Do you have any dog parks near you? Or a place where Miley can run full steam?
We try to do lots of stimulation with Renzo. I'm always having him do "stuff" whether it's just sitting in a stay, giving me his paw for a treat etc. I also look up YouTube videos on different tricks we can train. This one was a hit and very easy to teach: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttEZKk-DtMo Even if it's a silly trick that is ok - it works their brains!
Good luck with Miley! Sounds like you have a spitfire on your hands! :-)
