I Cannot Believe These People

B got an email last night from his cousins inviting us to their son's 5th birthday party, which is happening this coming Sunday.  I just dismissed the last minute nature of the invite, but B just forwarded me this gem from his cousin:

"Sorry for the late notice.  Darling M would love this very expensive ($400) Lego toy for his birthday.  It should keep him busy for a while, as it has over 3800 pieces!!

So, we are taking up a birthday collection.  L and I will buy the toy.  Lucky us!  Just let us know if you will go in, or if you will be getting him something different on your own."

It's so tacky, I had to share.

Re: I Cannot Believe These People

  • Wow! It amazes me how people think that is okay to do.

  • wow.

And just for amuesment purposes this would make me want to a) not go at all and b) send a giftcard to some place that you know they can't ues it towards the legos, or c) send something education that doesn't have 3800 peices that a 5 year old will lose in no time.

  • This is where the evil person in me would send them a toy that is amazingly fun for a kid but a nightmare for the parents. (i.e a clay, a snow cone maker,) something that is ridiculously messy and horrible to clean up after.  or my favorite a rock tumbler. Awful loud and messy.

I like option B. Then they still have to do the shopping themselves and they can't get the legos. How crazy!

  • I like how the parents are trying to make it sound as if they are taking some big hit for the team by buying it.

Also, what do they mean "we'll be buying it"??  Uh, yeah, you and whichever other friends and family members you've guilt-tripped into pitching in.

  • Wow. That's just over the top. I'd seriously think about doing the gc thing Kari suggested.

They should have fun once those 3800 pieces start to scatter, though. Bare feet + Legos = ouch.

  • Dup post.

  • Wow, that is so tacky. On top of the last minute e-mail invite they're actually asking for gifts. Yuck!

  • 1. Ridiculously tacky

    2. Crazy expensive for a 5 year old's gift

    3. Who in their right mind would allow a kid to have 3800 lego pieces.  I cannot even fathom the pain in the a*s this is going to become

    4. You should buy the kid rubbermaid containers in which to store the legos that he will get bored by in 10 minutes.

  • Wow.  All kinds of wrong.

Seriously, a $400 lego set for a 5 year old?  I'm 29 and I hardly ever receive something that expensive.

  • I see a kid who won't know how hard the real world is for a very long time.... Really $400 for some damn Legos? I like the rubbermaid container Idea or also a really ugly sweater or sweatshirt.

  • Erinn, I was thinking the same thing.

Jess, I completely agree.  I'm 29 and work full time, and I rarely buy myself something that expensive.

I worry about what will happen when this kid joins the real world.
