I really don't want to do this

So on March 1st some guy who claimed to be from my former University emailed me personally on facebook (from his personal page) and asked if I'd attend a college fair on behalf of the school, at a local high school.

I agreed same day, and he over-nighted me a small box of supplies and a FAQ sheet.

I emailed him on March 7th & 31st requesting a phone call to discuss the specifics. The HS this event is at is HUGE (3,000 students). I've actually never been to the high school. I know the event starts at 6:30 but I don't know what time to be there, what my table number is, nothing. We haven't discussed the generic FAQ's either.

I get no response.

Finally I emailed this last night at 9pm

Chris - I still haven't heard anything from you. I'm not quite sure where at a,t WTHS this event is being held - do I need any ID or anything? What time am I needed there to set up?

I've tried twice to reach out,

He finally responds almost immediately

I am so sorry we haven't touched base. I am out of the office recruiting in virginia. Call my cell when u get a chance ***-***-****

I'm really aggravated with the entire situation. I'm not getting paid for this. It's been the most unprofessional thing I've ever had to deal with.

This could be a vent, it could be a request to bail on the situation.

Please give me feedback.

Re: I really don't want to do this

  • OMG your new siggy photo made me LOL.

    That is very unprofessional.

Although you committed to it verbally, his lack of professionalism would make me want to bail. You don't personally know this guy? Does anyone you went to school with?

If no, I would bow out and just say you can't do it right now with the lack of details and planning and responsiveness.

But again, I am kind of no nonsense these days....

  • Of his 1473 friends - none are mutual friends.

His registration fee was only $25 for the event.

He sent me a copy of the invite letter from the High School, but no confirmation of registration, no forwarded emails with instructions. Nothing.

  • I can always go, attempt and abandon ship if need be, right?

  • Yeah, you could. Although I probably would just eat the 25 bucks and tell him I can't go.

  • I'm with Jax on this one. You don't need the hassle.
  • I agree. If he can't take the time to let you know about this fair and keep you updated, I'd bail. That's ridiculous.

  • Hell no. Don't go. Tell him he sucks.

  • It is definitely very unprofessional on his part.

I do this for my former school and I can tell you sometimes the details are a bit scattered.  I'd probably do it, but never again because of the way he acted.

I feel like, because I verbally committed, then I committed through hell and high water to attend.

I like to believe that good people exist in this world, and by me agreeing to do this....I'm continuing the cycle of good people or good deeds or something.

    Ugh...

  • Yeah, I'd go. I can't not if I said I would, even if their disorganization annoys the crap out of me.
