What time for a 2nd birthday party?

I'm struggling with what time to have my DD's 2nd birthday party. We are inviting a few friends with kids ages 6 months-3 years. DD usually naps at about 11 am, which I think is earlier than most kids her age. I'm thinking most others nap around 1:00. Her birthday is on Easter, so her party will be that Saturday. We hope to have it outside with outdoor activities and maybe and Easter egg hunt.

So WWYD? Go earlier, around 10:00 and have it over by nap time (if she's having fun she'll be fine staying up), or later around 3 or 4 after everyone wakes up from naps?

Re: What time for a 2nd birthday party?

  • Is there a community Easter egg hunt that day?  Ours is that morning.  I wouldn't make it for the same time.

  • I would do it later in the afternoon and provide light-heavy appetizers since it's after lunch and before dinner. You wont' want cranky kids at her party! :)
  • Is there any way to do a different weekend?  I know it's not a huge holiday, but a lot of families still get together.  If set on that day I'd go morning since some people do Church that night.  If you move it go afternoon.
  • My sister-in-law just had a birthday party for her 1 year old and it was @ 10:30am. There were kids there ranging from tiny babies to 3 and 4 year olds. Maybe have it around 10:30 or 11 and have light snacks for the kids after the hunt. I think my nephew usually takes his nap around 12:00/12:30pm but it was his party and he was too excited to even think about napping. I think your guests could tweak their little ones nap times to come to your party!
  • If it's on the Saturday, I wouldn't worry about church conflicts. I would worry about community Easter events, though.

Most events during Easter (at least, around here) are morning events. I think 3:00 p.m. would be best, unless you can move it to another weekend. Moving it might be your best bet, since Easter weekend is two weeks away, and it's likely many people already have plans for both days.

  • I vote for 3 or 4. That gives you more time to get ready and gives your guests more time as well. Whenever we have to attend morning parties, its always such a struggle getting everyone ready and there on time. Plus, on Saturdays I still want my leisurely morning with my family and don't want to start prepping for a party right after breakfast.
  • As a mom who is also planning the 2yo celebrations, I say early morning.  Approx 9:30a and have it go for 2 hours MAX.

The only reason I think 930 is best, the party is over by 1130a...and then you could get a good nap in!  If you do a late afternoon (330+), you may run into difficulty if your LO skips his/her nap or doesn't have a good nap.
