gas station authorization charges
i was lurking on money matters and someone posted that she used her debit card to fill up her tank which cost $43, but the gas station put a $100 hold on her bank account...this was the first time this has happened to her.
She asked if this was a new or standard practice and it seems that in some states it's standard, but in others the standard ranges from $1-$85 and then some $100.
Here it is $1.
What is it where you are?
I'm not too thrilled about $100 hold every time we have to get gas...K has to fill up like 3 times a week! I don't really want to use a CC ....hope this doesn't become the standard all over.

I guess I never noticed it on the debit card but I know on the cc they put a $1. I guess they do this with debit cards, not sure.
$100 seems like a lot though.
Funny you ask this. Tuesday I had to get gas and I was reading the sign that said here they put a hold of 100.00 on your debit card until they know the transaction has been authorized. The of course once it has be authorized the 100.00 comes off.
Right. It this girls case, she did not have $100 in her bank account, but $20something got transfered over automatically from her savings. She was pretty ticked b/c she knew she had enough for the gas, but did not expect a $100 charge to go through and then it reconcile to $43.
Ugh...this seems annoying!
Apparently if you use your credit card they do not issue the hold. I guess in the way it makes sense. Bc when a person uses their debit card unlike the credit card where the money is put on there automatically with a debit they are pulling money from the account and it can sometimes take a couple of days for it to clear the bank.
I guess the sure fire way to avoid that is to pay with gas at the gas station.
