gas station authorization charges

i was lurking on money matters and someone posted that she used her debit card to fill up her tank which cost $43, but the gas station put a  $100 hold on her bank account...this was the first time this has happened to her.

She asked if this was a new or standard practice and it seems that in some states it's standard, but in others the standard ranges from $1-$85 and then some $100.

Here it is $1.

What is it where you are?

I'm not too thrilled about $100 hold every time we have to get gas...K has to fill up like 3 times a week! I don't really want to use a CC ....hope this doesn't become the standard all over. :/

Re: gas station authorization charges

  • Where I normally get gas they don't put anything extra on it.  I'd be pretty ticked if they held 100 each time!

  • I guess I never noticed it on the debit card but I know on the cc they put a $1. I guess they do this with debit cards, not sure.

$100 seems like a lot though.

  • Funny you ask this. Tuesday I had to get gas and I was reading the sign that said here they put a hold of 100.00 on your debit card until they know the transaction has been authorized. The of course once it has be authorized the 100.00 comes off.

Right. It this girls case, she did not have $100 in her bank account, but $20something got transfered over automatically from her savings.  She was pretty ticked b/c she knew she had enough for the gas, but did not expect a $100 charge to go through and then it reconcile to $43.

    Ugh...this seems annoying!

  • I've heard of it before, but here it's only $1, and not all places do it.

  • I think that's crap.  I would be soooo mad.  I e, I have never noticed.  I have no idea if they do that here, something worth looking into, especially since we are going out of town for a few days and would be using our debit card for fill ups =/.  I wonder who to contact about that?

  • Apparently if you use your credit card they do not issue the hold. I guess in the way it makes sense. Bc when a person uses their debit card unlike the credit card  where the money is put on there automatically with a debit they are pulling money from the account and it can sometimes take a couple of days for it to clear the bank.

I guess the sure fire way to avoid that is to pay with gas at the gas station.

  • I've heard of that before, but I never use my debit card...so I have no idea what the standard practice is around here.  I have one credit card that I use for everything, and we pay it off every month.

  • I think it depends on the gas station. I use my debit card all the time for gas, so I've seen both the $1 and $100 hold. It might also vary by state. Since I live on the border of NJ and PA, It might be NJ that puts the $100 hold on my card, but it sits in my "pending transactions", but as soon as the transaction is authorized in their system, it is removed...
  • In GA, it's a $75 hold if you use your debit card. Clark Howard talks about it a lot. We always use our credit card at gas stations (good reward points).
