Who takes care of your household finances?

Just curious. DH does financial stuff for a living, and last year started up an environmental services company, Basically he works 16 hours a day and has very little time to take care of our financial stuff.

Recently I took this over. I gathered up all the most current bills, signed up for online bill payments, put together a budget spreadsheet, and am giving DH a weekly allowance for work/misc spending. I feel so empowered. I always left this for DH to do and I was so out of the loop. I am still a tad overwhelmed by it, but I think it'll be ok once I get the hang of tracking spending, etc.

Any tips for more effective budgeting or tracking of spending? Who does this in your house?

Re: Who takes care of your household finances?

  • We actually split the costs. DH pays for the major things like the mortgage and insurance and groceries. I pay the utilities and cable/internet. We keep our money seperate so if he wants to buy something he has to work with his own budget. The kids we kinda split on depending on what it is for.

  • defiantley me.  I saw DH's way of paying bills when we first started living together.  He usually bought whatever he wanted and paid his bills with whatever was leftover, after he got a few notices.

Anyway, I quickly took over the roll.  I would be crazy if I didn't have any control of the finances, but probably a lot less stressed.

I track everything we spend with an excel spread sheet, and break down the categories as such:

Income, Fixed Expenses, Non-fixed Expenses, Entertainment, Gas and Groceries also have their own category, Gifts,Take out, and Unexpected Expenses.

I categorize savings into fixed, as it is a fixed amount that automatically comes out of our bank account every month. After tracking for a few months, I applied a percentage of income to each category.

Example: total fixed/ total income= 40% of income on an average month.

This way I can see how much we generally spend on these categories and wether we can make any of them smaller.  Also, I can determine mid month how much more money we can spend on entertainment, take out, and unexpected expenses as most other categories don't have much room for change.  This helps us decide if we can afford an outing 2 weeks from now and so on.

  • DH does all the financial stuff, but we talk about it together a lot so I don't really feel out of the loop.  He lets me know where we are with spending each month, and we always communicate about big purchases.

We are both pretty good with finances and keeping spending down, but he is just better at being organized about it.

  • I do, but I don't do the best job so I don't have any tips, lol.

I just got the PC Mastercard- the one where every purchase on it earns points towards free groceries- and I set up all our bills to charge to it automatically. I figured out that if we use that card instead of our debit card we should earn about $500 per year in free groceries. There's my tip Stick out tongue

  • Thanks for the info all :) I struggled a bit to come up with reasonable budget allocations for certain items/categories so I will be sure to review my numbers after a few months to make sure that I am in the right ballpark! lol I hadn't thought of using points credit cards, that's a good idea.
  • I take care of the bills - when DH and I met I was a bank teller, it just kind of made sense.  We both work in Finance/Accounting now though.  DH takes care of the investments/financial planning.  We don't do any day to day budgeting.
