Thank you notes...

After an interview, is it better to type or handwrite a thank you note?  I had always thought it was okay to type it, but now I'm second guessing...

Also, I could email, but is one more personable than the other? or preferable?

Thanks!

Re: Thank you notes...

  • My rule of thumb is e-mail if they're going to make a decision quickly, and snail mail if you have some time.

  • I haven't had an interview yet, but once I do have one, I plan to send a quick thank you email asap after the interview and then send a hand written thank you note afterwards.

  • I did emails, but I was influenced by my husband thinking a Thank You at all was unneeded. One of my job offers, the guy who did my interview said he was really impressed with the fact that I sent a Thank You.

The lady who told me about doing Thank Yous said she would go to a parking lot near the place she interviewed, write the thank you in a thank you card, and drive back and give it to their front office to give to the person. Her supervisior said this was one of the main reasons she got the job because she was so impressed by that. However, this was a job for fundraising and being able to write a good thank you letter is a big part of the job. So that may have played at part.

Either way I think a thank you at all makes you stand out. Whatever you chose to do, doing a thank you is a great move.
