We're passing on the house

The house we were considering buying a few days ago, not the HoR that needs to pass a budget.

We just decided that it was all too much for us. Too big, too far, too much work. We could have afforded the selling price, plus the initial repairs but there were farrrr more repairs that would have been needed to make me happy. And it was literally three times the size of our current house, so the cost of utilities and upkeep could have put our expenses over the edge.  Plus, although I liked parts of the house, I didn't like the general layout and flow.

So, thanks very much for all the input the other day. DH is sad because it was such a lovely neighborhood but I'm okay with it.

The DC Nest. Winers welcome.

Re: We're passing on the house

  • Oh, bummer.  I know you guys have wanted to move for quite a while now.

I hadn't read the PP until just now...  I'm curious, where is the house (generally speaking)?

  • If you didn't love the house, then you made the right decision. The right house will come along!

  • Sounds like you're making the right decision if you have that many doubts. I agree with gtown--the right house will come along!

  • when we were looking we almost bought a project house. it was really gorgeous and i loved it but i thank god every day we did not buy it. it would have ended up being a really bad decision in the long run.

  • I think it's a good decision.  After owning our house, I will take any estimate that I have for work and double it.  I'm guessing that house would have cost far more than you expected.

  • It sounds like it was the right decision and that you all are at peace with it. It would've been a lot of added stress and there would've been a lot of unknowns which would've made me nervous. Hopefully one day you can find your dream home.

Do either or both of you work in DC? I'm not familiar with the area, and I'm sure it's lovely, but that seems like a heck of a commute. Nothing would be my ideal neighborhood around here that was more than 10 miles from DC.  But that's just me. I think you made the right decision.

Yes. Hence deciding it was too far. It was only 10 minutes from the Shady Grove station, but would have added a half hour to my commute, each way.
