Potty training question

Hi all - I'm coming out of lurkerdom with a potty training question.  I'm on day 2 of potty training my 2 1/2 y.o. DS and it's going really good.  So far we've only had one accident and it was a #2 yesterday.  Any tips for getting him to go #2 in the potty?  He always runs away and hides when he goes in his diaper, so I'm just wondering how I can convince him to sit on the potty instead.  This morning I told him we could go pick out a toy at the toy store if he went, but I'm still waiting to see if that will work.  I'm open to any other ideas!  Thanks

Re: Potty training question

  • Prizes definitely help.  I think your best bet is to catch him in the act and whisk him to the potty while he's still going...even if it's mostly done by that point.  Having it fall into the potty and then being super excited and giving a prize.  I just kept it reaaaaaaally positive and it worked. :) Good luck!

  • The first time we got C to go in the potty I could tell he was getting ready to go so we went in the bathroom and I let him walk around the room with his diaper off.  At some point I started to smell something and when I looked he had started to go #2.  I quickly put him on the potty and everything got in there instead of on the floor.  Afterward he got to flush and wash his hands like a big boy and he thought that was cool.  Now we have a "stars" reward system too and that seems to interest him when he's not too busy playing to forget he needs to go.
