Vegas hotel question

Every website (the official hotel site, expedia, orbitz, etc) states that a deposit is required at check-in for incidentals movies, phone, etc) and is separate from the actual bill. For example, we can book through a travel site and pay in full. Then at check-in, the hotel will ask for a deposit for incidentals. It's roughly $100/day. We definitely won't be using these services and I don't mind giving them a deposit but I'm worried about not getting that $200/$300 back.

For lack of a better word, are hotels relatively honest about returning the deposit? We'd be staying at a hotel chain that owns a lot of hotels. Thanks!

Re: Vegas hotel question

  • I think they can just run a credit card and place an authorization hold on the deposit amount.

ETA- FWIW a lot of hotels do this nation wide- we are almost always asked for a CC when we check in, that way if we do the self-check out they can bill you for stuff from the mini-bar, etc.

  • If I remember correctly, the Wynn did this when we were there and we weren't charged anything.  Like Daisy said they just place a hold on it until you check out then you can either put the extra expenses on the card or pay in cash.
  • What Carolyn and Shanda said is what we experienced at the Mirage.  An extra authorization was placed against our card to secure funds in case we charged things to our room.  At checkout I signed the final bill and that's what we were charged.  I do recommend reading the bill thoroughly and completely and checking your bank account while you're there to see what hits and what doesn't.

That said, however, if you're using a debit car, your experience may be different.  A friend was going to use his debit for the same hotel and they would have run the charge through completely to secure the funds.  If he did not use the additional funds secured in charges to his room, the funds would be returned to him but could take up to 30 days to appear back in his bank account.

Ditto to FIA!  Pretty much every hotel does this now.  You'll get a bill at the end of your stay.

They will put a hold on the actual money on a debit card.... so, a credit card it recommended.

  • I've stayed in plenty of hotels but I was never as budget conscious as I am now. Thanks for easing my concerns!
