need nap advice...

Allie sleeps well at night but we are having nap issues. The biggest problem is that she is watched by 2 different sets of people during the week. Which means not everyone is watching out for her sleep signs in the same way. Her nap times are all over the place and she is a bear at night time. I want to nap train her over vacation. Any tips/advice would be great. We used ferber for nighttime and it worked great. TIA

Re: need nap advice...

  • the only thing i can suggest is to put her down the same time everyday.  mine always go down between 12:30-1 every day.

when delanie was around allie's age, she was in daycare - she always had funky naps. i figured it was due to the fact that she wasn't as comfortable or it was too noisy

  • I *think* you can ferber naps too, right? Since it worked at night, maybe try it during the day?

  • how many naps a day is she taking? J was napping 2x a day at nearly 9 months old. She was down to one nap around 10.5mo though.

If she's napping 2x a day, think of the times you want her to nap and really try to stick to them. If she's usually tired at 9am, nap her at then, but not before. Then pick an afternoon time that works for her too and do the same.

J would nap at 9 and between 12:30/1:30 depending on how long she napped in the morning. When she went to one nap a day she went down around 12:15/30 and now goes to her room around 1, and falls asleep between then and 2 - she has always needed time alone to unwind though so she plays, tucks in her baby dolls, read a story and then falls asleep (she never leaves her bed)

  • She takes two naps a day but sometimes she is up for 6 hours between nap. Sometimes the nap is only 20mintues other times 40 minutes.

Today: woke up at 4:15(she was doing so great at sleeping until 5 but not this week!). Then she did not go down for my mil until 10am(40 mins) and then at 1pm for 20 minutes. Then at 4:00 dh got home with her she was a mess and needed another nap(an hour..had to wake her bc it was getting late).

I agree with the bolded part. We were having nap issues around 6/7 months and we finally just decided to choose times and stuck with them. L would go down between 9/930  and then again around 2/230. Her awake times at that age were never much longer than 4 or 4 1/2 hours. Anymore than that and she was a mess.

    Good luck!

  • We did 2 naps a day at that age, and the way we did it was that  I would just put him down. I picked 9:00 and he went in the crib at that time every day, no matter what.  I let him CIO, and he would fall asleep (took about 10 mins).  This also helped us out at night time because he learned to self soothe and fall asleep on his own.   His second nap was at 2:00. I also stressed to my sitters that this was how we did things and they pretty much followed my direction.

It sounds to me like A is getting too overtired during the day.  6 hrs of wakefulness is too long at her age., and this is why she's doing such short naps, and is a mess at night.  DS was up for 2-3 hrs before getting tired, and then it went to 4 hrs when he was 12 mos, and then he ended up dropping his morning nap around 15 months and now goes down immediately after lunch at 12:30 (again, I chose the time) and sleeps til about 3pm.

Because you have different people watching her, I would defintely just pick a time you want her down and go with it, since like you said, they are unfamiliar with her cues that she's tired.  It is the same with me.  A different person watches him every day.

  • Thanks ladies! There is no huge issue at night time...thank god! She has been waking up early this week but I think that is bc of the nap issue. I hope this can be fixed on our vacation. She goes to daycare 3x a week and I don't see them letting her CIO. We will see!
