f/u washer dryer - need your opinion

So hubby and I went to Sears last night to look at washer/dryer and dishwasher. Our dishwasher's pump went out and it basically will cost $250 to replace the pump... so I might as well buy a new dishwasher....

You maybe asking why sears, well my Uncle is working there part time and he will get the commission. I wanted to give him the sale. Plus sears has a sale if you buy 2 appliances you get 10%; 3 you get 15% off; 4 you get 20% off. Plus Kenmores are an extra 15% and with my uncle's discount an extra 10% off. So we are getting some serious savings... Oh yeah plus free delivery and they will haul the old ones away...

So we looked at the front loaders and ... i like the looks of them, but the issue is you have to buy a pedal stool. I am almost 6 foot and without the pedal stool it is too much bending with my knee. Which I am not good at currently with my knee problems. Plus, hubby is 6'6 so he has a lot of bending as well.  We could always buy the pedal stools later because they are not on sale right now...

We ended up deciding to get a  a top loader that is basically like a front loader same options, same great water saving, it will actually be cheaper for us to get that then the front loader. One of things i really wanted with a dryer was a steam option which was in the front loaders. Apparently they have that technology in the top loaders as well.

So when we left our sears to call my uncle (who lives 3 hours away) to tell him what we wanted, we picked out this washer:

and this dryer:

When I called my uncle, he recommend this washer:

it is a cheaper version but it has a chrome door instead of glass. He says he sells this mismatching set all the time to people because they want the steam option in the dryer. It will save us about $150 before all the extra discounts.

Eric is sold on the mismatching washer/dryer. I kind of worried about them not matching (very silly I know...)
Granted, they will be in our basement and no one will see it...

Am I being ridiculous?!? Should I just go with the mismatching set? Thoughts?

  • I think that the two washers you posted are the same...

Also, I would also be hesitant to get umatching w/d, but you're right - no one is going to see them, and if your uncle thinks the other one is better, it might be the way to go.

Does the one he recommended not have a matching dryer that you like?

  • Oops, sorry this is what my uncle recommended:

Only reason he recommended it, was same model (only slightly smaller) and has a chrome lid instead of glass.

I completely feel like I am being ridiculous... over matching or not... but I guess I just feel I want nice things... We don't ever spend this much money... I think this is our first big purchase and I just want it to be nice.

  • We just selected our washer and dryer, choosing front-loading for both due to the higher capacity for the washer, and the options we wanted. We also got the pedestals for both. We did order the "last year's model" so it had discounted pricing.

I looked at it from this point of view: I'm going to have these appliances for the next 15 years or so - they're the ones I'll have when I have little kids running around, which will dramatically increase our laundry volume. Having a set that handles more at one time and is ergonomically friendly is a good thing.

  • I know that $150 is $150, but in the grand scheme ofthe purchse to me that is just a drop in the bucket, so to speak. I guess I don't feel like $150 is that much more to spend to have the matching set, and the one that you picked out is bigger, which may come in handy once a family comes into play.

  • I'd have to have a matching pair.  You know me though.  Wink

  • How funny!  We didn't buy a dryer when we got our washer because our old one still worked.  But it is starting to take a long time to dry and a local store is going out of business, so today we decided to go take a look.  When we told the lady we didn't care if we had a matching set she looked at us in shock and said, "Finally!  Some normal people!"  I'm not implying any of you are weird for wanting a matching set, by the way.  I get it!  But paying that much extra for something that matches, when it is going to be behind closed doors all of the time...it's just not important to me.  My vote is save the $150 and use it for something else that you want.  (Although I do have to put out the disclaimer that we did end up buying a dryer that matches our washer,  but that's only because it was the best rated one for the price.)
