All of my traveling nesties...questions for you...
Ok so DH and I have waffled about our annual vacation for weeks now and I think we are narrowing it down. At first we were going to go to Ireland, then Canada, then Maine, and now I think we have settled it...and I need advice.
We will be flying into Ramstein, Germany and will have 7-10 (childfree) days to do...??? What are we supposed to do? We have friends that live in Belgium and we might visit them but other than that I am at a loss. I've only been to Luxembourg when I was in the Army and loved it. DH used to be stationed in Belgium so I know we will go there...thoughts? CCan you help me come up with an itinerary? We have to end in Ramstein to fly out (we are doing military flights so Ramstein is our best option for flying in and out of DC).

if you're definitely going to belgium, then i'd do bruges and maybe amsterdam.
otherwise, i'd do munich and prague or munich, salzburg, and vienna.
The train system is pretty easy. You can google for the european rail system. If you want to just walk in and buy tickets you're better off doing that in the off season (i.e. not summer) As for any research, every European trip I've planned has been internet and library travel guides for ideas/inspiration. Since you guys are military, do you have any friends over at Ramstein? They could be of help as well.
i would strongly recommend waiting until september. most europeans vacation for almost all of august and in most places it will be incredibly hot. also, it will be a bit less expensive come september. and if you opt for italy, it will still be quite warm. we went in mid/late september and rome was downright hot, florence still very warm during the day.
the trains are very easy, you can buy your tickets that day or the day before with no trouble.
I agree summer time most Europeans go on "holiday" so many places are closed...Your trip sounds wonderful!!!
Hubby and I went to London to visit his family last month...we also spent 4 days in Paris (our first time) and my hubby surprised me how much he liked the city..the train system between countries is great and the paris city train system rocks!
My parents got us the Rick Steve's books for Ireland and France since we were going there for our honeymoon. They're great for food and hotel recommendations! He gives hotels and food for different budgets. Maybe you could check them out from the library and they could give you some good recommendations.
We stayed near Rue Cler when we were in Paris and it was a great location.
