Toric Contact Lenses

Anyone wear Toric contact lenses (for astigmatism)?  How long did it take you to get used to it?  Do you wear them in both eyes or just one?

I wear normal contacts and a few months ago I noticed my prescription had changed in one eye, turns out my astigmatism just got much worse.  I've worn the toric lens in my right eye for 1.5 days now and my normal lens in the left eye and it's been giving me even vision in both eyes but a horrendous headache. I finally took the toric lens out and that seems to be helping.

Re: Toric Contact Lenses

  • This is one of the reasons I finally got lasik a few months ago. I had been wearing regular contacts because my astigmatism wasn't very severe. It gradually got worse, and last fall, it was suggested that I should move to toric lenses. They just never felt right to me. I regularly got headaches, and just got tired of it. I switched back to the regular contacts, but then I didn't feel like I was seeing well enough. So, I started wearing glasses almost every day, which was the best option for me since I didn't like any of the contacts, but still not ideal.

I'm sure it's not what you wanted to hear, but in my experience, I didn't get used to the toric lenses after wearing them for about 2 months.

  • My doctor brought up Lasik and it has been on my mind the last few days.  Hearing your story makes me think about it even more.  I'll definitely be thinking about it over the next 6 months just because if I did it we would fund it through DH's FSA next year to save some $.

  • That's what I did - I used money from my FSA.

I know it's not super cheap, but getting lasik is honestly some of the best money I've ever spent. It's so worth it! After having glasses/contacts for 25 years, it's awesome not to have to wear them anymore.

  • I also recently started to wear toric lenses.  Hate them! I don't get headaches, however at least 5 times/day my vision in that eye get all blurry and takes too long to go back to normal. When I asked the dr for regular lenses again, he pretty much refused saying that he wouldn't be able to match my prescription well enough!
  • I've worn a toric lens in my left eye for about the last 8 years or so. I remember it took a few hours to get used to the normal lens, but about a week to get used to the toric one. Sometimes my toric lens moves around and my vision is blurry for a few seconds, but I've gotten used to that happening.

I recently switch to Acuvue's toric lens. It feels a lot thinner and more comfortable than the ones I had before (Bauch & Lomb I think?). My astigmatism isn't very bad (right on the line of needing a toric lens) and I did try out a regular lens in that eye for a few weeks. I didn't like it though - things were weirdly blurry.

  • My dr's office always has me come back 3 weeks into a new Rx and 6 weeks into a new Rx to check how my new lenses are working out.  I've been wearing contacts since I was 12, so new lenses don't usually bother me.  I've had torics for about 10 years and I do remember going to the 6 week appointment the first time I got them and telling her that it clicked about week 4/5.

Now I have one toric and one regular lens.  I don't notice the difference in them at all when I blink, but I know that the toric corrects to the right spot.

I'd find an office that is willing to work with you with your lenses.

  • I used to wear them.  Lasted about 6 months before I finally gave up on the idea of contacts and opted for Lasik as well.  LOVE IT.

After wearing glasses since I was 5 and never really finding contacts that didn't bother me, I am love love loving having my eyes done.  The cost is definitely outweighed quickly, and the week of "no eye makeup" is easy.

  • I've been wearing toric lenses for about 9 years. I have a terrible astigmatism so I've never worn anything else. I've tried 3 different brands over the years. I currently wear Biofinity lenses and I LOVE them. They're super thin and comfortable. I wore the Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism for a while and I hated them - my vision randomly went super blurry and they were really uncomfortable. I felt like they were always moving around.

Before that, I wore Bausch & Lomb. I  didn't have any problems with them but I didn't love them as much as I love the Biofinity ones.

  • if you're a candidate, i would definitely recommend lasik. hands down the best money i have ever spent in my entire life.
  • I've worn Frequency 55 and Baush & Lomb. I much prefer B&L. They don't bother me at all.
