maternity/belly pics advice?

I've found someone close to us who is willing to do belly pics (and "family pics" with DH this weekend - he's VERY reluctant to even tag along with me, and is being a total party pooper!) at a price that fits my tiny budget.  She's good at photography, and is working on developing the hobby as a business, but I don't believe she's got much experience with this genre.

We're meeting Sunday morning, and I didn't think I'd be able to make this come together, so I haven't put much thought into preparing for it.

Any advice for what to wear, props, shots, etc?   I want to be as ready as I can, since DH is so resistant.

Re: maternity/belly pics advice?

  • Tess J did mine. Maybe check out her site to see some examples? Or other sites too. Carly has done some too.

Oh wait. I did some of Carly!! :)

  • Tess also did mine- I'm the bellydancer in the gallery!  I'd recommend checking her out for ideas too.  http://www.tessjphotography.com/

Some of my favorite shots were with the bold jewelry accents and soft fabric.  I love the one where I'm wrapped in the white chiffon with my hands out over my boobs, the necklace is draping down, and my big ol belly is popping through.  Anything that was really soft and feminine worked for me.

She does a lot of scantily clad things, which I love, but you or your friend might be less keen on.  I will say that if you go for the less is more look, watch out for your undies rolling over to show the inside seams. I have that in a few shots (because I was scooching the fabric away from the belly) and all I see is the ugly inside of my underwear.  I also wish I had prettier lacy things to wear- again, upping the feminine touch.

I also hate the much played out "put your hands on your stomach to form a heart or have you husband do it."  Lots of photographers do it, lots of people seem to like it, but it seems awfully played out to me.  Tess didn't have me do it much and I was doing shots to help with her portfolio, so I was game for anything, thus I didn't put up a fight.  Just know that it is a VERY common pose.  Wink

  • Both Tess and Carly did ours and both were fantastic and different. The big difference was indoors vs outdoors.  Definitely check their sites for examples.  Are you doing pictures inside or outside?  I love pics with a big fat ribbon around the belly.  :-)
