Is your heat still on?

DH and I turned our heat off last week because we are cheap and oil is EXPENSIVE.  Our bedroom was down to 55 this morning and our first floor was at 51.  I don't know if I can handle this over the weekend when we are home all day!  We have a space heater that I turn on at night sometimes if I am sitting on the couch, but it is useless if I am moving around getting stuff done.  I feel like a wimp.  I am very much looking forward to Monday and its forecasted 70something degrees!

Re: Is your heat still on?

  • For sure. I'm not going to suffer. We have gas though. And our bill went down last month since it has been warmer and the heat doesn't have to kick on as much/often.

  • I'm so jealous.  Your house is probably nicely insulated too!  DH wants to convert to a gas burner but the cost is so high.  And we would still be working with a steam radiator system and leaky old windows.  It's times like this that I miss my apartment (pretty much the only time!).
  • Yup, gas too... but it's set on an automatic timer thing and I need to remember to change the settings soon. I did turn it up last night when I was sitting on the couch-- I was surprised how cold it got last night!
  • Yep, heat's still on and will stay on until temps are consistently at 60 minimum.  We have a programmable thermostat and gas heat, but tend to keep things lower than most.  When we're out of the house it's at 55, at home it's at 64.  Sometimes I'll turn on the gas fireplace and sit in front of it if I need to warm up more.

I'd be careful about turning yours off completely.  It can still get chilly at night and you don't want your pipes freezing one night (unlikely, but not impossible around here!).

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Yup. Normally, we're the type to keep it low. But not with the baby, now it's always at 68.

This is something I am going to have to budget for when it comes time to have kids.  I can't even imagine how high our heating bills will be to keep our house that warm!

Rock, we do monitor the temps all over the house to make sure the pipes aren't going to freeze.

  • Yup.  We have gas, and I will keep it on until it stops being cold.  I hate feeling cold.

Our oil company delivers oil based on our estimated usage and we've had to call them 3 times this winter to tell them we are running low. Finally, last week they said "You're using oil much faster this winter" and DH said "Yeah... well... we have a baby now. We need to turn the heat on more." haha

In all seriousness though, our heating bills have just about doubled. We used to be able to turn it down lower during the day and keep it at around 62 when we were home. But now, I'm home with the baby so it's on 68, all day every day.

  • Our heat is hardly ever on. DH likes to live like a polar bear so even when it's on we only keep it at like 60...65 tops. He also sleeps with the windows open when it's freezing out and the fan on so I usually wear several layers and a couple blankets.

Indifferent   I'm shivering just thinking about this!

I was like this when I was pregnant. We had the air conditioning on in November.

  • Yes, although my programmable thermostat has recently been possessed and I cannot wait to turn the thing off.  A few weeks ago it not only switched to Celsius (and will not switch back) but is following its own bizarre schedule that I cannot alter.  For the past few weeks we've woken up sweating because the heat is blasting at 22* C.  I'm not sure of the F equivalent but 22* is ridiculously hot, lol.
  • SCM, that's like 72 degrees.

We have the crappiest heat ever in our apartment, so it's always up around 68-70. Because I refuse to be cold in my own house, I don't care what it costs.  We got spoiled in our last place, because heat was included, but at least we have gas now.  I remember having a $600-700 oil bill one winter, and my roommates and I almost threw up when we saw that.

  • Ahh, yes 72*F is hot in my book.  Before our thermostat went wacky I had it set for 65 when we were home+awake and 60 all other times.  I like it chilly.
  • Our current place has electric heat, but it's zoned heating, so we only turn on the rooms we are in.  We haven't been using it as much...but I'm a FL girl and do not like to be cold, especially in my house, and especially at night.  DH sleeps with a fan on him (aka us) all year round, which keeps me cold.  Warmer weather can't get here soon enough....although I'll be complaining about the heat during the summer :)  Luckily our new place has central A/C (so excited!).

  • I have never had oil heat, thankgod. It is so pricey. I did have electric heat in one uninsulated attic apt once and regularly had heat bills in the $400s each month. Ugh.

So, I'm in SC but there were a few nights last week I still had the heat on. Not for me, but because I cannot use a blanket on DS and I would check on him and his hands would be freezing. he sucks his thumb, so I can't cover them up with those gloved shirts.
