Suggestions? BC issue.

Hello All!

First off, I apologize if this has been addressed previously. I am new to the nest and recently married (Nov 2010)! I am going off my the pill this month. I am on ortho tricyclen-lo. It has aggravated my migraines to the point of exhaustion. Well, I do not want children anytime soon (if ever) and am very allergic to latex. Does anyone have any suggestions on possible birth control methods that are non hormonal or latex free, but not irreversible? I have an appointment with my gyno next month, but just want to be prepared with any suggestions before my appointment.

Thanks!

  • Mirena IUD.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Paragard iud and yes, they will insert it even if you don't have a kid (I have paragard and no kids).

I will warn you, insertion although not horrible, was uncomfortable. Periods are much heavier (for 2 out of 5 for me) and I have bad cramps (aleve works great for that).

athe only downfalls (vs bcp)are can not control when I get my period, the heavy bleeding and the cramps (for some reason I do not get cramps every monto though).

All in all, I love it and would get another if dh wasn't getting a vasectomy when this one is up.

  • Definitely look into FAM/NFP. That's what my DH and I do. It does require a higher level of commitment and awareness -- you definitely have to pay attention, it's not as "care-free" as taking a pill or and IUD. But I love being hormone-free! I started on bcp but I couldn't take the migraines either! www.tcoyf.com has some helpful info as well as a great forum. And I'd definitely recommend reading the book if you're interested! It's awesome to know what's going on with your body :)

  • I am not sure if diaphragms or cervical caps are latex free, but you can ask your obgyn.

Also, look at the Planned Parenthood birth control information and see if there is a method that you think would work for you.

  • and there are latex free condoms.
  • I know I always say this...but progesterone only pills (mini pills) are used by many docs who have patients with migraines. Especially if regular pills exacerbate them. Some docs will NOT put you on a reg pill if you get migraines, and will only prescribe a mini-pill (Micronor is a brand name)

They also may seriously lighten or stop your period, depending.

  • I went off NuvaRing two months ago.  DH and I are now using over-the-counter contraceptive film (spermicide).  So far, so good.  Good luck!

  • We're using NFP. I don't really want an IUD and DH hates condoms. I can't have anything with hormones in it, due to a history of blood clots.

  • Thank you so much for your advice everyone. We think we are going to try to NFP for now and see how that goes. I will bring up the other options with my ob/gyn!

You can combine NFP with a diaphragm...and what about sheepskin condoms?  My good friend hates any hormonal bc and uses condoms combined with a diaphragm.  But I think NFP used with (or without if you abstain on your fertile days) a diaphragm would work great too.  :)
