Tiff (BF question)

We are going to a BF class in July but thought I ask you. I am going to try to BF at least the first 3 months. My problem is when I go back to work. I know legally they have to provide a place (other then the bathroom) and let me take my breaks to pump, but I am not sure how it will work, if I would be comfortable, storing, etc. Is it okay to give formula during the day and then BF at night? I was not sure if that is bad for LO or not.

I am really torn on all this.

Re: Tiff (BF question)

  • Butting in - I went back to work at 3 months and am still pumping. What I did was to pump at night before I went to bed once Lucie started sleeping longer, then after I fed her in the morning and started freezing it all - I had like 200 oz when I went back to work!! I continue to do that as well as pumping 3x at work and we are just now running low on our frozen supply and will probably start supplementing when it runs out as my supply has been decreasing and Lucie eats a lot - even though she's skinny! I buy the lanisoh breastmilk storage bags, pump in our conference room and store the milk in the fridge - being a 3 person office makes that easy though. Tiff has been great in suggesting ways for me to up my supply but they're not working for me. I dont want to supplement but know we have to and my plan is to still pump and give her as much bm as I can. We've made it over 5 months so that is good!
  • Butting in too.  I know Caroline and I are probably experts in this area, Jess too, I think, so you can always ask us about working/bfing stuff too : )  I did the same thing as Caroline and started preparing for when I had to go back to work as soon as I could.  I would pump any extra chance I had so that I could build up a supply.  When I went back to work I did have a pretty good supply but it didn't last very long.  I also didn't get to pump at work as much as I should have to keep up with Andrew's demands, so we had to supplement with formula.  Getting him to drink formula wasn't as hard as it was to get him to take a bottle as he was used to, and much preferred, nursing.  But we made it work.  He did fine with the formula and after putting up a good fight, would eventually take the bottle too.  And then whenever I was home we would just go back to nursing.  It all worked out okay and I was able to BF Andrew for over 16 months.  Just always remember that you can only do the best you can and what works for you and nothing more than that.  It takes a lot of work and commitment to work and continue BFing.  Lugging all your crap to work everyday, using up any breaks you would have to sit attached to a pump, cleaning all your parts every day...  So don't be too hard on yourself about how much you have to supplement or whether you decide not too BF anymore when you go back.   Just do what you feel is best for you and your family.

Oh and I also used the Lansinoh bags too.  They are the most affordable and work great.

  • Thanks girls. I didn't think about pumpingevery little chance I could get and build up a supply stash for when I go to work. I want to BF for as long as I can and you girls have given me some ideas. I guess I am thinking too much into this.

  • In the beginning you will have to pump during the day. Ideal is every 3 hours, but you could probably stretch it to 4. If you don't empty your breast your supply will suffer. Lots of people supplement with formula, but it's not a starting place. It's more of somewhere you end up over time.

You are correct that your company has to provide you with the time and space to pump. The working moms on the board are more of an expert in this topic than I, but just know that with some effort you can make it work!
