To my unemployed (not by choice) nesties

How long have you been unemployed and how is your job search going?

I am 28 and married, no kids. I have been unemployed (laid off) since January 2011. The job search is going OK. I am looking for admin assistant/bookkeeper jobs. I have been on 3 interviews so far with 2 of those going into 2nd interviews. On one job, I came in 2nd. I hope that this unemployment stint will end soon because I am about to go crazy in the house.

What about everyone else?

Re: To my unemployed (not by choice) nesties

  • I'm 23, graduated from college with my BA this past May, got married in July, and moved out-of-state for my husband to start med school in August. I was unemployed until December when I managed to pick up a part-time job for 8.50/hr. Its enough to keep my loan payments at bay, but I really, really need a better paying job soon.

I have had about 2, sometimes 3 interviews a month for full-time positions. I keep getting to the final interviews but haven't snagged the golden job offer. It is pretty discouraging. I have an interview next week for a 2/day a week overnight advocate position for victims of domestic violence. Its a start to get something fresh related to my field on my resume` though.

In the meantime I'm volunteering for some human trafficking victim outreach, and I am trying to get involved in some court work.

I've been applying to anything I can find--administration, data entry, legal. Anything I'm remotely qualified for. Hoping something pans out for me sooner rather than later.

  • I just hit four months unemployed. I left my job in Minneapolis in December to move to Chicago where my fiance took a position in September. I've networked like crazy, been to countless networking events and applied for 60+ jobs. I've had four or five great interview processes, one resulting in an offer I decided not to take. But, again, nothing like the "dream job" yet.

I interviewed two weeks ago for the "dream job" - waiting to hear back on a second interview. Crossing my fingers.

It's such a hard process. I was able to remain positive really until the last couple of weeks. Now, I feel like if this job doesn't come through, I may take a look at other options - freelancing, consulting, etc. rather than a full time position. But we'll see.

  • I'm now working but I was unemployed for 7 months last year.  It was truly one of the most difficult things I've ever had to deal with.

Good luck with your search and try to stay positive!!

  • I went through a bout of unemployment in '09 - lost my full time job that July and while I bartended part time (very part time that season...one day every other week and cover for other bartenders as needed) I didn't really find anything until October...and that was just on a contingent basis.  Landed something FT in December...but a job that made me miserable but I stuck it out.  Finally September of last year I landed that job I am now at (and am very happy with).

If you're looking for admin/bookkeeper work...have you considered registering with a few different temp agencies?  My current job came through a temp agency that I had been registered with for quite a while, but had never actually been placed through them until last fall.

  • Just at 3 months unemployed. I have applied and applied and sent resumes out etc.   I have my FIRST interview on Monday for a job I probably don't want.

It's been a big kick in the pants since I was employed for 20 years at my last job (yes I'm older which does NOT help).

I've been to job fairs which have all been a joke, but since you never know, I still attend.

My severance just ended Friday and I have been stashing away money, building up our e-fund.

I am soooo thankful that in FL COBRA is only 35% if you were involuntarily unemployed (aka laid off).  My insurance will only be about $120 for full coverage including dental.  I will not go without insurance thankfully.

  • I am recently employed but I was out of work from November 10 till the last week in march.  I got married and my H was on the other side of the state.

I was going crazy at the end I was applying to a lot of jobs I am only a few years out of college so I didnt have much experience.  I  did not know almost anyone besides family when I moved none of them in an remotely related field.  I had only 3 interviews the whole time.  I was a finalist to one and then got 2 offers at once.  I picked the one with the most potential for the future.  The job doesn't pay great but it is good experience and its a pay check.  We live completely off my H salary and he was benefits and stable job.

The thing that helped me the most of volunteering I met people who put me in contact with my current employers.  It filled up my time and I felt like I was doing something worth while.
