Normally I work 3pm-3am but occasionally if staffing is tight at different hours they will ask people to volunteer to change their shift a little bit. When I was at work last night the charge nurse asked if I could work 5pm-5am tonight. I told her that was fine, and she said "Okay, great! I'll change it on the schedule."
Today I called the day charge nurse at 2:45 to make sure the nursing student I'm precepting can be placed with another nurse until I get there at 5, and she had no idea what I was talking about. She said she didn't need me to do 5-5 because someone else volunteered, so I'm scheduled for 3pm (as in, 15 minutes from right then). So in kind of a huffy manner she says "So I suppose you won't be here at 3?" Considering I'm still in my PJs because I thought I didn't have to work for 2 hours (since that's what I was told), no I won't be there at 3. Then I stupidly said I'd try and get there before 5. And of course I'm dragging my feet now because I don't want to be flexible and get there early because being flexible is what got me into this mess in the first place.
I'm glad I called since I would have been deemed a no-call, no-show otherwise, but I'm pissed that I agreed to be flexible, changed my sleep schedule around to accommodate that, and it turns out they didn't change the schedule at all and now I'm potentially in trouble for not showing up "on time." It makes me really wish I didn't have to work tonight at all. ![]()
