any middle school teachers out there?

I am considering putting in for a transfer to a middle school to teach 7th grade reading and do grades 6 and 7 reading support.  I have worked with grades K-6 but never 7th.  And I have never worked in a middle school.

What do you like about teaching in a middle school?

What do you hate about it?

Thanks for sharing!

Re: any middle school teachers out there?

  • I teach middle school Spanish- 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.  I like that the students still want to learn and generally want to do a good job in class.  The things that irk me sometimes are minor like kids saying someone took their pencil.  The hormones can be pretty wild but overall they are a fun age and always entertaining.
  • When I first started teaching, I taught 7th/8th grade.  It wasn't for me. I had to do more disciplining than actual teaching and I hated that.  The students were just at a weird age where their hormones were raging, but they were still little kids.  I transferred to the high school the next year and that's where I've been for 5 years.  LOVE it!
  • I've taught MS (mostly 8th but a little 7th) for 11 years. I love it and wouldn't teach in any other division.  I love the kids...they are fun and energetic and not jaded in the way some high school kids are. They'll do stupid skits and songs and activities in class that older kids would roll their eyes at.  But they are also growing into themselves and it's cool to be a part of that process with them.

I don't love how overly dramatic they can be and how mean they can be to each other.  parents can be hard too.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • I love middle school.  They grow so much academically during those years.  They are getting to  where they can really start thinking critically, and they are still in a phase where they want to please and are willing to follow the teacher's lead.  They are still kids in a way.  Middle school kids are fun.
