I have my childhood education certification and am finishing up my masters in Literacy this August.
I have worked in a childcare center the past two years as a preschool teacher and supervisor. I left that job this school year to sub in hopes of getting a long term or permanent job...at least get my name out there.
My old boss just offered me a assistant director job at the childcare center starting Monday. I would get a pay increase because of it.
I really did not like working there and was always stressed and upset. I have been so much happier subbing but I know the economy is crap and they are cutting 400-500 teaching jobs in our city school district, suburbran districts have been on a hiring freeze.
Should I take the job and have a stable job with good money, but be miserable?
Or keep subbing where I am happy and hope something will eventually happen?
I really want to sub, but the money issue plays a big role.
Re: What would you do?
After I posted this, I found out that they hired another girl to work with me as assistant director. This girl they fired about a year ago because they overheard her yelling and swearing at me because she thought I was taking over her position. She was getting lazy and had a power trip so they gave me some of her responsibilities (I never asked for them, never got a pay raise)Then she was mad at me for getting her fired...even though I never said a word about getting her fired, my bosses just happened to overhear her doing it and so they fired her.
Because they needed someone asap they hired her back and want me to work with her as two assistant directors.
Odd.....this may be enough for me not to take the job so I don't have to deal with her drama.
I would rather stick with subbing, if I were you. But you have to consider that something better (moneywise) might not come along.
I'm with you- drama is no good.

I was going to say take the job back for the income stability.
Then I read your second post. I doubt that the level of stress will go down, especially w/ the that other person being there. If she thought you did those things before, why would she think differently now?
I can say that staying in a job for a paycheck alone and being miserable sucks. Been doing it for 11 years and am having such a hard time getting out. Best of luck to you!
You need a steady job, right? I would discuss with the hiring manager about his/her for the distribution of responsibilities between you and the other girl. Don't mention the past of your concerns about her specifically. Be confident that you can partner with ANYBODY, and always keep the communication clear and professional. Once the distribution of responsibilities is outlined, see if you can get you, other girl, and hiring boss in to a meeting to review and make sure that every one agrees with what has been laid out. Compromise to the point that you are seen as the team player but do not let the other girl take away all your work or stick you with the minor tasks while she takes all the high profile important duties.
Stress in the workplace and how one handles stress in the workplace are two separate things. I don't think you should let the first one prevent you from earning a steady paycheck.
