Teachers: Rick Wormeli?

Are you familiar with him?

I just got back from the New England League of Middle Schools conference and he was the last presenter that I went to go and see.  He was awesome and has left me questioning some of my classroom practices (specifically around grading)...must read more!

The rest of the conference was pretty good--more of reinforcing what I already know is best practice and reminding me of new things that I have been wanting to try...Now I just need to create some more hours in my day...

Re: Teachers: Rick Wormeli?

  • Perhaps not...

So food for thought...we traditionally grade on a 100-point scale.

    100-90=A

    80-89=B

    70-79=C

    60-69=D

    59-0=F

Why are 59 of the possible 100 points an F?  Why are there gradations of failing?  Wouldn't it make sense for Fs to be equally representative (50-59) so that when you are averaging grades zeros aren't more weighted than As?  If a kid has 4 100s on assignments and one 0, should their overall grade really be a 80 or should it be a 95? (counting all 100s and then the F=50).  If they still get all Fs for not doing anything, they will still fail, but why use the most punative end of the F rather than the most instructive...

Not totally sure how I feel about it, but I am getting his book, Fair Isn't Always Equal and Meet in the Middle to learn a bit more because I think maybe it makes sense.  Your thoughts?

(Also, you can youtube him for videos about his philosophy...fascinating)

  • I've never heard of him!

We don't do 50-59 as an F. Anything below a 50 is an F for us.

One of the things I like about my school board (mostly) is that we do most recent and most consistent in terms of report card marks. So, when I input all my marks and weights, I take the number my computer spits out at me and decide whether or not that actually reflects what the child deserves.

    Equity =/= equality, you know?

  • Yes...that was actually one of his big arguments...that we should use mode rather than mean when calculating grades.  His most famous book is called Fair Isn't Always Equal...I just downloaded it...

  • Do you guys do differentiated instruction? One of the former teachers at our school now teaches in California and she was saying it's only just catching on down there. I know things vary from state to state (and province to province), so do you guys do it?
  • Yes...it has been here for as long as I have been teaching...at least at the middle level.
