How long is a typical dishwasher cycle?

Mine seems to run forever.  It's been two hours and it's still going!  This is our first dishwasher (gasp!) and it came with the house.  It has otherwise been repaired (for seemingly unrelated issues).  Is two hours normal for a reg cycle?

Re: How long is a typical dishwasher cycle?

  • Ours goes for probably around 90 minutes just washing.  I never run the dry cycle, that would add another 30 or so minutes.  I normally run it when I head up to bed and just empty it in the morning.
  • Because of the energy saving features on today's dishwashers, many of them can take up to 2 hours to run a complete cycle. I usually set mine to go on at bedtime, so I dont have to listen to it for all that time.
  • im not sure exact time it runs but i know it is a while. I have just learned to tune mine out when its running!

  • We just moved and the one that came with the house (which was probably from 99 and not an energy star appliance) was fast. DH says the newer energy efficient ones take much longer. Our dishwasher from the last house (1 yr old) took forever and so does our brand new one. It takes even longer when you use the adaptive wash cycle where is supposedly knows how much water to use. They are Whirlpool dishwashers BTW.

  • weird, mine takes under a hour. I usually shut it off before the heated dry and only run on regular wash or extra hot wash b/c I add bleach to every load.
  • We have a new Whirlpool one and it takes FOREVER! It's definitely more then 2 hours....I want to say closer to 3-3.5. And it does a crap job. I'm not happy with any of our Whirlpool stuff (washer/dryer, fridge and dishwasher) but that's a whole other story ;)

  • Ours varies. It has a sensor that tells if the water is dirty still or not. It will adjust the time accordingly. I used to wipe the dishes off and then put them in there. Lately we have been more lazy about it and it takes it longer to do a load.

What kind of detergent do you use?  I love my Whirlpool DW.  However, I have tried to use crappy cheap soaps in teh past and found that the dishes came out dirty.  I know use those little squares with the ball on top, and everything comes out sparkily.  I love the glass quick wash cycle.  It only lasts 30 minutes ( no drying ) and it even gets my dishes clean.
