Job Search Question

Okay, so a while back, I wrote a post about how to go about seeking a job when you already have one.  Another job opened up at my dream school--the same school that I mentioned in early March-- but it's at the middle school level, which is where I want to be.  My problem, again, is getting a letter of rec from someone I currently teach with.

My school is only 19 staff members, and an hour away from my house.  They understand how far I drive on a daily basis, and with the price of gas going up, a school that's 5 minutes from my house is sounding really good.  I am worried that if I ask for a letter from someone I currently teach with, they will not be able to keep it a secret that I'm looking for another job.  Would it be okay to not include a letter of rec from where I am currently teaching and include letters from where I student taught last year?  Another teacher I know mentioned that I could send something that says that I can provide references from my current position if requested.  That way, if they want those references, they're interested in me.

I just don't know what to do here!  The application is due April 29, so I have a little time, but it just concerns me that it would get out I'm looking for another job if I ask someone at my current school for a rec letter.  I don't really want anybody to know unless the new school is interested in me.  Any advice?

Re: Job Search Question

  • I would probably go with option C.  Calling the people who are advertising the job and asking them if a letter from where you taught last yeat would be okay, then sending that along with a statement saying they can have one from where you currently are on request.

Most employers understand that you might not want your current employer to know you are looking for a new position, so I am sure you aren't the only person who wouldn't be able to get one from their current school.

  • I would try to find at least one person at your current school that you trust to write you a letter.  Hopefully they would understand.  I would also think that with the driving situation, everyone would understand.  Certain schools have high turn over rate and they are use to it.
