Help with gala attire

We've been invited to attend the spring gala for the National Museum for Women in the Arts.  What is proper gala attire for a Friday evening?  Do I need something floor-length?  It's supposedly black tie, but I don't know what that means these days for something like a museum event.  I know I've seen women in their 30s in cocktail dresses at black tie weddings; would that work for a gala as well?

Thanks!

Re: Help with gala attire

  • That's always tough!

DH and I have a "gala" that we go to every year and you see everything from floor length evening gowns to nice Sunday dresses. But it's usually mostly cocktail dresses.

One thing you could do is check on their website and see if there are pictures from the gala from last year...maybe that could give you a clue to what most people wear.

Also, if you are looking for a dress, I just have to recommend this site that I found that seems really cool and I totally want to try it:

    http://renttherunway.com/

You can rent designer dresses for pretty cheap and they'll send you more than one size and the shipping is all free. It seems like such a great idea to me. I am so bummed that I didn't know about this before my one fancy event this year. I hope they are still in business next year :-)

  • fun! I'd consider attending this..a group I volunteer with had tickets. Wearing a really nice cocktail length dress should be fine and fun jewelry! Priscilla of Boston BM dresses is pretty young, inexpensive and could be used for the gala...

This was my thought exactly.  If not on the museum website, then look at some of the DC area "society" mags who send photographers to all those events.  I can tell you the annual gala for my chorus is pretty swank, and I would assume a gala for a museum would also be - I'd go floor length if you can!

  • For example:  http://www.washingtonlife.com/

ETA:  Also, don't be thrown by the Friday night part - often our galas are on weekday nights, and that doesn't make it any less formal/dressy.  In this town, the swank events are thrown every night of the week!

  • Thanks, all!

I'm hopeful I can get away with a cocktail dress as I find them easier to fit.  Dresses are a challenge for me with my figure.  I actually have the perfect dress at home, but it doesn't fit these days.  Dammit!  Just a couple more months, and I would have been golden.

Instead, I will be hitting Tysons like a madwoman this week.
