Bruises

Let's say you're going to a wedding where you want to look nice, but you have a big ugly bruise on your leg, and it will definitely show. Does this bother you or not? Do you try to cover it up?

I'm just wondering how most people feel about their bruises. When I was younger, I never cared. I seem to get bruises quite easily on my legs, and I just figured they were a part of life. I had this one bruise that never fully faded for a few years and people would comment on it. My feeling was always "haha, isn't that funny that that bruise is still there?" But I guess the people who were commenting probably thought it was ugly.

Now that I'm older, and I don't show my legs very much, when it comes time for me to wear a dress but I also happen to have a bruise, I feel really annoyed toward the bruise. If I know I need to wear a dress for an event coming up, I will have to remind myself to be extra careful so as not to carelessly bang my knee against my desk, which I seem to do all the time. Which I did, just now :( And it annoyed me enough to write this post, especially since I plan to wear a dress this coming weekend!

Re: Bruises

  • I think it depends - like if I'm going somewhere that I know I'll be seated most of the time (legs not visible), I don't care.  If I am going to be up and mingling, I will use concealer (Ulta's cream concealer works great for me).  Right now, I have about eleventy billion tiny bruises on my knees and I look like a Blow Job Queen.  I would DEFINITELY cover these up.  ;)

  • I don't even think twice about showing my legs when I have bruises (in fact, I'm doing so right now at work).  I pretty much always have bruises because: a) I'm clumsy; and b) I bruise easily.  I looked quickly and I currently have 5 bruises.  They're pretty light and not too visible right now, but even if they were, I'd still bare my legs.

I don't think people commenting on your bruises are grossed out by them or trying to tell you they think they're ugly.  They probably just thought it looked like it hurt and were curious about it.  I get that all the time.  The problem is, 90% of the time I can't even remember how I got a particular bruise.

  • I also bruise easily (and often) and never even remember how I got most of the bruises. I don't usually worry about showing my legs when they're bruised unless the bruise is particularly huge and/or dark, but I seem to mostly get those on my upper thighs and dresses cover them anyway. Otherwise, I just run with it, because if I avoided dresses every time I had a bruise, I'd never wear a dress again. I'm a clumsy mess, apparently.

  • On my legs, no I don't particularly care if I have a bruise, as long as it's not dark and I don't look like I was a victim of a violent crime.  But if I have a bruise on my arm, I do become annoyed by those.  A few years ago, I tripped over my H's work boots and fell into the tv stand.  My inner arm was BRUISED big time, which I was shocked since I didn't fall all that hard.  It sucked because it was the dead of summer and I had to wear cardigans every where I went to cover the thing up.

  • Bruises don't really bother me.  I'd wear the dress & not worry about people commenting on your black & blues.

  • Thanks for the responses, I'm glad I'm not totally crazy for thinking about my bruises!

  • It doesn't bother me.  I bruise so easily and get them all the time.  If it really bothers you then I would try to cover it up with some makeup.
  • I'm another person that bruises easily (I probably have at least 4 or 5 at the moment) and they usually don't bother me.  The only time I ever kind of think about them is if I'm going to a nicer event, like a wedding, and then it really comes down to how noticeable it is.  If you think you might want to cover it up (again, totally personal preference, I don't see any issue with not covering it), I've used the Sally Hansen Airbrushed Legs spray stuff to even out the skin tone on my legs (I have a pretty big purple scar on my knee and until recently had two noticable burn scars on my right calf) and it works pretty well to minimize the visual impact of bruises.
