anyone have an ipad?

I think I want one.... what is your opinion of them.  To give you background, I have a laptop but it is for work.  I use it for everything (my boss doesn't care) but I really don't like traveling with it when its not work related, because if something were to happen with it, i would be screwed.  I like that the ipad is small and light, but I don't like that it is only wifi.... some hotels only have wired internet.  I can buy a travel router, I had one but it died.  So I don't know... someone just tell me what to do! :)

Re: anyone have an ipad?

  • Well, if you are willing to drop more coin, you can always get the 3G enabled iPad.  We have the original iPad (WiFi only) and I really like it.  That being said, I think it's at its best for listening to music, playing games, and surfing the internet.  Typing on it is basically like writing a text on a bigger iPhone.  If what you really want is computing power, you might be better off buying your own laptop.  You could get a lot more bang for your buck.  While I love our iPad for what it does well, I honestly don't think we would have bought one if we hadn't received it as a gift.
  • yeah i will probably get the 3g one if i do get it.  At least the monthly fee for 3G is no contract, so you can just do one month if you are traveling or something.  I really think I would only use it for surfing the internet in the evenings/weekends, reading books (although I do have an older kindle).  I dont really need computing power per se.  And if I do, I already have a laptop.  I think that is what I am struggling with.  There is nothing wrong with my current laptop and I know I can get a nice new laptop for the same price as the ipad.  But i think the small, lightweight features of the ipad.  Plus I think its cool :)

  • It is pretty cool.  Our original iPad is lightweight and neat as it is- the iPad2 just looks that much cooler.
  • DH has one that his boss bought for him.  It's nice, but it's a lot of money for what it is.  I will say it is great for traveling if you get a 3G enabled one.  You can get 3G for a month for pretty cheap (there's a data limit but I know we didn't even come close to reaching it).  We got it when we went to Hawaii for our anniversary last year and it was awesome to have internet pretty much everywhere.

There's a new Android tablet coming out that's supposed to be really nice.  DH is a total techie and researches these things all the time.  He wanted to get me a tablet so that I could have an e-reader that would also let me do other stuff (music, surf, etc) and he's pretty psyched about this one.  The nice thing about Android vs Apple too is that you can fully customize the Android tablet with a homescreen and widgets while you're kinda stuck with the basic layout with the iPad.
