Good luck to all of the teachers that are administering FCAT tomorrow (and to anyone that has kids that will be taking it)!!! My 3rd grade students will hopefully do as great as I know they can! Third grade is a reallllly important FCAT year, so I am super nervous for them!
Re: FCAT
Is your niece in FL? If so, she doesn't take FCAT. FCAT is a state-wide assessment which is taken every year starting in 3rd grade. Each year they take different subjects. In 3rd they take reading & math, 4th is reading, math, & writing, 5th is reading, math, & science. I know they take them through hight school, but I don't remember all of the subjects/years.
In FL kids in grades K-2 do take a standardized state-wide reading assessment (FAIR), but that's it. Kids in some of the younger grades do sometimes take other standardized tests, but they are just school-based, and don't really mean as much.
Third grade FCAT is a big deal because if my students don't pass the reading portions they are automatically held back in 3rd grade, even if their grades are all passing. Third grade is the only mandatory retension year. It is also the first year they have ever taken the FCAT, so it is even harder on them.
Your niece's teacher might have just told her class something like that to get them to try their best on the test.
We won't get the results until the very end of the school year.
