DH and baby fever

I think my DH has baby influenza! I don't remember how we got on the topic of baby fever last night, but we ended up having a lengthy discussion about our TTC timeframe. DH is a PhD candidate with about 4 more years to go, so I've always said that we'd start TTC when he finishes his degree. However, last night he confessed (through tears!) that he's petrified of waiting that long, in case we have problems TTC. FWIW, we are both 27, so although I understand his concerns, it's not like we're pushing 40. He also said he thinks it would be easier for him to be a SAHD during graduate school, even though he will still be writing his dissertation. We ended up agreeing on waiting 15 months instead of 4 years because he felt that he'd already have a good start on his dissertation by then.

Re: DH and baby fever

  • I'm so glad your DH was able to be open and honest with you about his feelings on the topic and you were able to come to an agreement that works well for you and your future family :)  Sounds like we'll be TTC around the same time - I'm really looking forward to it!
  • He has a point about being a SAHD.  I know some people who've benefited from the flexible grad school schedule for starting a family.  If it's financially doable, it's a great plan.
  • You know, my mother (who has two degrees and is a professional) really tried to encourage me to get a master's and be a mom at the same time. :) She too felt like school and parenting were quite compatible! I am glad you were able to talk this out. And for what it's worth, I've always found it sweet when the guys are the ones who initiate in the TTC department. :)
  • H is planning on being a SAHD when we have kids.  He wants to start his own business and work from home, and/or possibly take night classes.  I think it'll work for us based on my work schedule.  There is no way I can be a SAHM.

  • That's so great!I agree that it's nice when your husband brings up the conversation, that way you know that they really mean it and aren't just agreeing for the sake of agreeing.

My husband freaks out still when I mention "When we have a baby, I would like to...blahblahblah" but I think it's because he hears me saying this instead: "When I have a baby tomorrow..."

    Silly husband :)

Haha.  My DH does the same thing.  I'll start talking about something when we have kids. For instance, "When we have a baby, we'll need to get rid of this spare bed." DH gets all wide-eyed, "Are you pregnant?!?"  Haha.
