Carpet cleaning suggestions

We are going to clean our carpets this weekend and we are wondering what the best way to go about this is (first timer, is that bad??). We were planning on renting the machine from Home Depot, but I wanted to check to see if there was a better route, since I've gotten so many great cleaning tips here! TIA.

Re: Carpet cleaning suggestions

  • I'm not a carpet cleaning expert, but I have done the rental thing before and gotten pretty decent results. I just bought the Resolve solution for the machine.

  • Make sure to use very little detergent. And you may consider running the machine several times with just water after you've used the detergent. Many times when people use rental machines, they don't get all of the detergent out. When that happens, your carpets will actually get dirty quicker because the detergent that's left over acts like a magnet for dirt and soil.

  • I am kind of a neat freak so I own my own carpet cleaner but the ones at stores that you can rent work good too (Rug Doctor is a good brand). IF you do it often, it's worth your money too buy your own. I clean my carpets every 4-6 months.
