Turbo Tax vs. H&R Block online?

Yeah I could ask this on the Tax board but I'm asking you all instead. :)

I've heard from coworkers that H&R Block online is just as good or better as Turbo Tax and is a lot cheaper.  But it seems on the boards (from what little I've looked into it) that most people use Turbo Tax.

Did you use one or the other and what did you think?

  • i would actually recommend using a local based tax preparer over either of the other two. check out this piece on WCCO:

in all fairness, i'm friends with the owners of fox tax but i know they are great. razamataz recently had her taxes prepared by them and had a fantastic experience.

  • We've used Taxact.com for the past 2 years and it was incredibly easy and I think only $14.99 for state/fed taxes.

  • I used Turbo Tax for about 10 years.

That said, I went to a local tax preparer this year and I'll never do my own again.  EVER.

Yep - we went to Fox this year and LOVE LOVE LOVED it!  DH's business and situation in general means that we are a more complicated case - and just the type of case that Fox is perfect for. I only wish we had gone sooner (and Strength had been recommending them for years, so shame on me for not listening!).

In the past we had used H&R Block (office) and Turbo Tax.  H&R block charged us an insanely high amount considering what they were doing (and they missed some pretty hefty deductions and issues too!), so after two years of paying them waaaaay too much, we did Turbo Tax on our own.  That wasn't too bad, but we always felt we were missing things and never felt 100% confident with the results.

After going to Fox this year, we learned A LOT and we will never do our own prep again.

  • My husband and I have been doing H&R Block  online the last few years and really really like it. We wanted to compare and did the turbo tax too and even though we entered the same information we got back more money with H&R block online so I think we'll be sticking with it.
