5 Years of my life...kind of a vent

I happen to be one of the unfortunate Borders employees that is having their store shut down. Our end date is the 17th of this month, but it didn't really hit me until yesterday. Yesterday they started packing everything up to send back. They stopped last night at 500K worth of stuff.

The place has a lot of bittersweet memories for me, but I worked SO HARD. We are losing our jobs and our benefits and the company didn't even have the decency to tell us themselves. We found out the last day for the store because they sent us a sign to post in the window. Only managers are getting severance, and one of them was made a temporary key holder within the last two weeks. He has only been with the company since October, and he got the position by openly talking *stuff* about employees on the walkie talkies and running off to tattle if we were so much as one minute late walking through the door. Once I was late because HE didn't open the door so I could get in...and he reported me.

Yesterday, the GM gave me some stuff to do, and in the middle of it, this temporary keyholder comes up and starts telling me to do other stuff because he's changing it up. Then an hour later, he makes me come all the way upstairs to the back office, so that he can give me a five minute lecture about doing what I was already doing.

I have put up with so much underhanded stuff from this company, and now I'm just another person losing my job. It drives me nuts that this guy is getting a severance package, and I'm getting NOTHING.

Plus, our store is the only bookstore in the area. There isn't another one for at least ten miles in any direction. And we're not exactly located in the middle of nowhere.

I would get more political with this...but I don't want to lose the little I'm already getting.

  • I've learned the world is retail is cut throat.

Are you only willing to drive 10 miles to find another bookstore? That's pretty unrealistic.

I'm sorry you're going through this. You need to start looking at unemployment benefits.

  • I got burned when I was laid off. They said it was due to "budgeting issues" that several of us were let go. Yet the week after, they hired a new college grad to run the show.

It was a blessing though- that place was not emotionally healthy to me. I found something right away, albeit something I thought would be temporary (but have been here 2 years now), but I enjoy my time off much more, the work/life balance is better, and I don't have to deal with as much crap! I am making less and getting fewer benefits, but it's what I had to settle with.

I'm still looking for the "new" job. That job/company I could be at for years to come. Someday, somehow.

If you like the bookstore atmosphere, then you will have to drive more than 10 miles to get to work. That is not a long commute, especially if you are in a more urban area. I went from a 4 mile commute to 15 mile commute because it was A JOB. Figure out what you are willing to sacrifice (length of commute, what the company does, pay, etc.) and prioritize on that. You might have to work a different line in retail to stay close to home if that's the biggest thing you want in a job.

  • 10 miles isn't too bad...I drive over 35 to see one client (I work in home health care).

Sounds like it's a good thing you are getting out of there...seems like a toxic situation. And I agree with PP...retail is pretty awful sometimes.

  • What I meant about the distance is that we now have NO local bookstore. I have an interview for a job at a bookstore 20 miles away. The problem is gas, at 4.33 a gallon at least.
