We have two hydrangea plants in the front yard...that never grow hydrangeas, only the leaves sprout from the sticks. We have been in the house for 3 1/2 years, so for the past 3 summers there have been no flowers.
Is it b/c the previous owner cut the plant the wrong way or something? Why aren't my flowers growing????
Is there anything I can do to make them grow? I have no idea about this stuff.
Re: anyone w/ a green thumb?
Hydrangeas need specific elements in the soil to bloom and to grow - and the elements in the soil help determine the color of the plants - I can't remember exactly. My guess is you need some type of fertilizer for them.
Also, is it planted to get the right amount of sun?
I'd recommend going to a garden center and asking about it unless someone here knows more about the specifics.
A quick google search came up with this site, but it doesn't mention the specific elements for color:

Color of flowers is from aluminum in the soil -- http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/colorchange.html
As for the not blooming, a different page on the same site that Amber posted -- http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/wont_bloom.html
they actually bloom off of the dead looking wood, so i wouldn't remove all of it. you can trim it though and it shouldn't hurt.
