Moms of older kids (well, older than mine)

Question about convertible car seats...which one do you have? Do you really think there is a big difference (aka big enough to pay more) for the Britax versus like a Cosco? I would ask my bump board but most of us are first timers and feel like the most expensive must be the best.

Re: Moms of older kids (well, older than mine)

  • I didn't see a reason to buy one of the really expensive carseats, but I also didn't go for the cheapest one I found.  We ended up somewhere in the middle for the two convertible carseats we have.

We got this one for my car.

And this one for my mom's car.  (My mom will be watching her over the summer.)

There are things about both that I like and dislike but overall we're happy with both of them.

  • I honestly didn't think there was a big difference - I just went with the one I thought was safest when we bought it. Both my mom and I have the True Fit Convertible car seat by The First Years [it was about $140 when I bought it in '09], and it's been a great car seat. I was able to rear-face JJ until his legs got too long to do so anymore [which was until last October, when he was almost 2 years old], and he can stay in this chair forward-facing until he's 65 pounds. It's comfortable, easy to install and has cup holders. :)

  • We got the Cosco Scenera in the beginning because it was way earlier than we'd planned and, hey, it's only $40. It's a fine, safe carseat (one of 3 rated "excellent" by Consumer Reports, at the time, I haven't checked their ratings lately). It has a nice cupholder. But it's definitely not as plush as others and not easy to adjust the straps (which is something we do about every 2 or 3 months, depending on growth spurts).

For our second one (because we needed one in each car), we went with the Evenflo Triumph (also rated "excellent"). I LOOOOOOVE it. It was around $120. Plush, comfy, super easy to adjust height and length of straps. The cupholder is kind of worthless, though...

I wrote a super long blog post about them: http://rodgersrachel.blogspot.com/2010/09/carseat-reviews.html
