Car just got the kiss of death

We were told 6 months ago DH's car was in great condition and easily had 100K miles left on it.  This said car took a turn for the worse a month ago and has been in the shop several times and now needs a new transition so it is being taken to the junk yard.

We have been preparing for this for a few weeks and are planning on getting either a used American or european car.  We have been looking at a Ford Fusion or getting another Jeep.  We were thinking sedan route since we just got a used jeep liberty for me back in Sept and we eventually think we want kids.  However, we haven't found anything we love and DH really wants a Jeep Wrangler.  However, I am wondering how many people might judge us if we did have kids and still kept the wrangler.... Embarrassed

Anyone have any opinions on the Ford Fusion, Jeeps or any other suggestions?  We don't want to spend a ton since this was not something we had really been planning on!

  • I don't really have an opinion on those cars (love my Subaru Tribeca if you want even more choices!) but I don't think you should worry about what other people will think if you have a Jeep wrangler when you have kids. I'm sure people will find other things to judge about your parenting, they won't think twice about your vehicle, lol;)
  • DH has a Fusion Hybrid and we love it. It's a great car.

He's had some trouble with the Sync system and his iphone though, so my suggestion to use is that if you get one make sure the dealer helps you figure it out (DH is being stubborn and won't ask for help). Also, the seat upholstery isn't that great, but that might be me being picky and it might be different in a regular, non-hybrid car.

Maybe I don't understand Jeeps all that well, but I don't see how they're not compatible with kids. Can you not put a carseat in one?

    The DC Nest. Winers welcome.

I wanted the hybrid so bad but unfortuantly it doesn't fit into our unexpected car purchase budget!  I only said the whole jeep and kid thing because it the jeep has a soft top, which some people view as less safe, but people are right I will get judged about tons of other things I am sure.  The ones we are looking at has a large back seat and is a 4 door car with a roll cage etc.

  • One of my friends has an '08 fusion and has had to put about $7000 into it the last year not including 2 things that were covered under warranty. Another friend just got a '10 fushion and needs the engine replaced. I'm not a fan of American cars to begin with, so I'd stick with Honda, Toyota, or Subaru!
  • We've had two Fusions and LOVED them.  We never had any problems with them.

The only reason we got rid of the first one was because it had high mileage.  We went looking at the newer model, and our payment only went up by $5 so we got the newer one.

DH was rearended, and wanted to get rid of the car.  So we downsized into a Focus, and he's still happy with that as well.

  • We have a friend who has a Fusion and he loves it!  He goes back and forth to his family in Boston once a month and has had no problems.

My parents drive an Escape and an Edge- and they love those too.  Stepmom is union and won't buy anything other than American cars (not even foreign built in the US), so they've been Ford or GM customers for years.  The Escape had a couple of small wiring related problems at first (windows, sunroof, lighting on cd changer), but they had the same root cause and the dealer fixed it under warranty, NBD.

ETA: The only reason I'd hold back on the Wrangler is if it doesn't have latch system compatibility.  The only Wranglers I've ever been in were back in HS so I have no idea.

  • We are fans of the Jeep Patriot, GMC Terrain, and Ford Flex as far as big cars go

I really like the 2012 Ford Focus, the hatchback one, but I dont think you'll be able to get one for a few more months I really like my Ford but I drive a Mustang.  Def not a child friendly car

  • DH had a Jeep Wrangler that we just sold a few weeks ago and we were super sad to see it go. I already promised DH we can get another one when we have a house with a garage. But I'll be honest, I wouldn't have put my daughter in the carseat in it because it was soft top. It had a roll bar, but I still wasn't comfortable with it.

  • I just bought a Ford Edge.  It has that sedan feel, yet sporty and its pretty decent on gas mileage for a vehicle its size at 23 MPG.  So far, I'm in love w/ it.  Especially the vista sunroof.

  • My dad has a fusion and loves it, he's had it for a couple years now and hasn't had any problems with it. I used to have a liberty and I loved that car dearly and was sad to see it go, but we had our 3rd DD and had to get a bigger car!
  • Once you have kids, you're not going to want the soft-top Jeep.  DH had one and we loved it, but once our son was born we couldnt bear the idea of him in the backseat.  You could consider a 4 door hardtop if you're set on a Wrangler though those are pricier.  My advice is to stick with a sedan if you know you want kids one day.
